‘Bob Hearts Abishola’: How Did the Season 4 Finale Set Up Cast Changes?
Spoiler Alert
[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the Bob Hearts Abishola Season 4 finale, “Uncharted Waters of Mediocrity.”]
Season 4 of Bob Hearts Abishola has come to an end, and with it, drastic changes to the show’s formula as Abishola (Folake Olowofoyeku) and Bob (Billy Gardell) set out to Baltimore, leaving their friends (and much of the cast) back in Detroit.
Season 4, Episode 22, “Uncharted Waters of Mediocrity,” sees doubt begin to creep in as Abishola awaits her acceptance letter to the medical school of her dreams in Baltimore. Also, Bob battles his subconscious (portrayed as his own father, played by Joel Murray) when he realizes he doesn’t want to leave Detroit.
As the episode goes on, Abishola realizes she hasn’t received her acceptance letter from Johns Hopkins and begins to spiral into a wave of depression. She believes she’s failed her family and friends, and they don’t do much in the way of denying so until her mother talks some sense into her. But then she finds out her husband doesn’t want to leave and gets mad when her failure equals his happiness.
As the episode draws to a close, Abishola gets her acceptance letter vai email, and although Bob has to leave Detroit, he’s happy for his wife and promises, “whatever happens, we’re gonna be fine.” And maybe they will, despite Bob’s dad still appearing as a sign of trouble, but the rest of the cast won’t be as fine, as the move to Baltimore will most likely play into why you won’t be seeing most of the supporting cast in Season 5.
According to Deadline, of the 13 main cast members, only Gardwell and Olowofoyeku will remain series regulars next season. The cast includes series co-creator Gina Yashere, Christine Ebersole, Matt Jones, Maribeth Monroe, Vernee Watson, Shola Adewusi, Barry Shabaka Henley, Travis Wolfe Jr., Anthony Okungbowa, Bayo Akinfemi, and Saidah Arrika Ekulona.
The rest of the cast was offered to continue as recurring with a five-episode minimum guarantee. Deadline reports conflicting information regarding the Season 5 episode order, with some sources saying it is possible for CBS to order a further nine episodes, bringing it in line with the 22-episode run for Seasons 3 and 4. If that happens, the guarantee for the recurring cast will stay at five episodes.
The current uncertainty revolves around the number of cast members participating in the new recurring agreement. Nonetheless, according to Deadline‘s report, some individuals are open to it as a gesture of respect towards the show’s producers, who find themselves in a difficult situation due to budget reductions at the network.

I’m really disappointed in CBS and Chuck Lorre. Chuck Lorre Isn’t even trying to fight for his show. Bob HeartsAbishola works because of the Whole Cast. Everyone has their quirks. I can’t even imagine no Kemni, No Gloria talking with Abishola. The actress who plays Gloria Vernee Watson has played a Nurse on every Chuck Lorre‘s shows. And Uncle Tunde and Auntie Olu are such a big part of Bob and Abishola getting together.
I was still hoping to see if Christina & Kofo get together.
CBS. Probably only renewed the show for another season so they could sell it into syndication.
Bob would never leave Detroit he just started up the business of making MaxDot socks in the USA.
So much different culture in the show and were pretty much losing it.

I don’t know why, but after the credits rolled, all I could think of was “The Ropers.” They were a huge part of the popularity of “Three’s Company,” enough TPTB decided to spin them off. But they quickly found that moving the “straight guys” to solo status just killed their magic. (Meanwhile, Don Knotts became a superstar when he slid into replace The Ropers.
I really wonder about shifting the focus to the most “boring” characters on the canvas, and getting rid of all the color that makes this show what it is. What made this show better than just OK was expanding the canvas to include more family and less boring couple.
I hate to say it, but a planned end date would have been preferable than watching a slow death. This is more kill Three’s Company for a mediocre spin off than risking a spin off while keeping the mothership. They need to go back and rewatch those early episodes to remind themselves of what didn’t work nearly as well.
Does anyone who likes this show enough to join in a discussion about it really think this is going to be any kind of improvement?

At this point we don't really have a clue about what we will see other than the shift to a new location. There has already been some set up for story lines at the factory and with the family, but it is still early days.
I'm inclined to see what happens and make my decision based on that rather than on what might be.

We know they FIRED the whole ensemble with the exception of the 2 leads and have not managed to secure the rest to agree to the paltry "5 eps" crumbs they're throwing at them...including the actual CREATOR of this show...what more info do you need? Yes, we DO have a clue, as the article GIVES us one.

Not having been in the writer's room for the planning of the next season, I don't know exactly what will happen except that Bob and Abishola are moving. Having watched the episodes I can see what the set up might be for some of the story lines. Which includes stories for those folks who could just as easily have been let go. What I don't know is how they will set up all the story lines. And as far as the article giving us a clue, we could just as easily be given some red herrings just to keep interest going over what looks to be a long summer. We already know the folks over at Ghosts have said they won't be providing any information on potential story lines for next season until next season. What makes you think that isn't happening here? After all, it is a favorite tactic.

I don't think the show could possibly be as funny without all of the characters. Very disappointing. I think this could be the demise of a great sitcom

Wondering why Chuck Lorre didn't go to bat for this series! It seems the writers have run out of ideas despite Yasher's input and just want to squeeze out another shortened season to be eligible for syndication.

Been trying to avoid feeling that way about the series but it's hard,
