‘The Resident’ Sneak Peek: Ian’s Struggle Is Becoming More Apparent (VIDEO)
Dr. Ian Sullivan (Andrew McCarthy) can relate to how a baby is feeling in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the October 11 episode of The Resident.
But first, he checks on Padma (Aneesha Joshi) and her twins and assures her they “look perfect. Healthy weights, strong heartbeats.” He even has some really good news for her and AJ (Malcolm-Jamal Warner): “I’d say this family can go home this afternoon.” For Padma, “that is music to my ears.”
Ian then goes to check on another patient, baby Jane, who can’t get comfortable. “I’d be miserable, too, if I was withdrawing from drugs,” he says, taking the baby in his arms. “I know it hurts, sweetie, trust me, I know.” Watch the video above for more about the baby’s health, where the mother is, and why Ian hurries away from the room.
The last episode of The Resident saw Ian cheat the system when the doctors had to take mandatory drug tests — he took pills that would give him a positive result, so now he must retake the test.”Ian’s addiction is just gonna be enormous,” showrunner Andrew Chapman told TV Insider. “Addiction’s a huge problem in our country, but it’s an issue in healthcare. And again, the mission of the show: Make the public aware of those things and explain them in digestible bits. Ian’s that guy. He’s the guy who performs his job well, but he’s an addict. How can you do that? How do you solve that problem? We’re gonna dive into that.”
In this week’s “It Won’t Be Like This for Long,” Ian is faced with performing a surgery on a Jane Doe NICU patient while he continues to struggle with his personal issues. Meanwhile, Conrad (Matt Czuchry) asks Devon (Manish Dayal) to cover his shift so he can spend a day at home with an anxious Gigi.
