What’s the deal with Trotter Lake and mystery blonde Tiffany, and why is Asher (Matt McGorry) so determined to keep it all hidden? Major light will be shed on that dark secret tonight when it’s revealed that the wealthy, seemingly upstanding law-school student once did a bad, bad thing. “It’s devastating,” McGorry promises. “By the end of [the episode], there’s no question that people are going to be terribly upset and probably very mad at Asher.”

To continue to get away with what he’s done, Asher may have to trust the very woman he’s been working as an (albeit reluctant) informant against: law-bending boss Annalise (Viola Davis). “Asher’s relationship with Annalise is complicated,” McGorry says. “In some ways, she’s someone whose approval he’s vying for. But there have been times they’ve been at odds, so he’s grasping at straws as to what to do, and he’s in a position where’s he’s vulnerable to being manipulated.”

Particularly after learning the twisted details of girlfriend Bonnie’s (Liza Weil) dysfunctional childhood in last week’s episode. “Asher is incredibly disturbed by that information, because he really loves Bonnie,” McGorry says. “To see someone you love in that kind of pain is excruciating.”

The toll the Trotter Lake bombshell takes on the couple’s relationship will be “really heartbreaking,” McGorry adds. “I don’t know if there’s hope for them, especially given her history and what he did.” Still, the more dramatically complicated Asher’s life grows, the happier the actor—who was largely a source of comic relief last season—becomes. “I’m having a lot of fun,” says McGorry, who also costarred on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. “It’s different than rolling up to work and just making some penis jokes, which I did a lot last year. To get the chance to be able to play such a different side to Asher is very satisfying—and really juicy!”
