Halyna Hutchins was a Los Angeles-based cinematographer who tragically passed away on October 21, 2021, during the filming of the Western movie "Rust." She was fatally wounded by a prop firearm discharged by actor Alec Baldwin on the set in New Mexico.

Hutchins, born in Ukraine in 1979, was recognized for her work in the film industry and had been a rising star among cinematographers. Her career included work on several films, music videos, and television productions, and she was known for her vision and dedication to the craft of filmmaking. Her untimely death led to widespread discussions about safety protocols on film sets.

She won an award for best cinematography at the 2019 English Riviera Film Festival for “Treacle”. She was posthumously made an honorary member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) on November 14, 2021.
