8 Worst HGTV Shows, Ranked
Even discounting its bad press and its beige-ification of America, HGTV is not the same cable TV offering it was when it debuted as Home, Lawn, and Garden Channel more than three decades ago. Gone are beloved shows like Design on a Dime, Curb Appeal, and Room by Room, and in are countless real estate flipping shows, celebrity-focused renovation shows, and franchise extensions.
And for our money, the shows below are the biggest offenders, the worst HGTV shows we can remember. These offerings aren’t so much “turnkey” as they are “turn off.”
Fixer to Fabulous: Italiano
La vita was not so dolce for Fixer to Fabulous stars Dave and Jenny Marrs as they faced permit issues, building restrictions, inclement weather, language barriers, and culture clashes while renovating an Italian villa. Non ne posso più, we say — HGTV is supposed to be relaxing viewing.
Down Home Fab
Chelsea DeBoer extended her 15 minutes of Teen Mom 2 fame on HGTV, but her and her hubby’s Down Home renovations are not so fab, in our books. There’s a certain sameness to the designs as everything is a combo of white, black, and wood tones. (The Kardashians, at least, would feel at home.)
Flip or Flop: Vegas
In this case, what happens in Vegas really should have stayed in Vegas and not on national TV. As Flip or Flop’s El Moussas faced an uncertain future, HGTV found a possible replacement in Bristol and Aubrey Marunde, who gave Las Vegas homes gaudy makeovers that made them resemble second-rate casinos.
Christina on the Coast
Flip or Flop alum Christina can definitely Haack it as a solo designer, but Christina on the Coast focuses too much on her personal life and not enough on her professional work. If we wanted reality TV shows masquerading as renovation programs, we’d tune the dial to Bravo.
Property Brothers at Home
Jonathan and Drew Scott are affable TV personalities, but their HGTV empire is too much of a good thing, and our Property Brothers fatigue started when they used their TV riches to turn a foreclosed house into a bachelor pad. At Home felt felt like a privileged vanity project.
Windy City Rehab
This renovation show was plagued by fraud allegations, subcontractor and homeowner lawsuits, stop-work orders, and a messy professional breakup between Alison Victoria and former co-host Donovan Eckhardt. Suffice it to say, Windy City Rehab needed rehab itself.
House Hunters on Vacation
We all know by now that House Hunters is a carefully-constructed ruse, but it’s still fun to watch. We can’t say the same for its Vacation spinoff, in which participants pick a home to stay in for a week. It’s like watching someone browse Airbnb listings, and the stakes couldn’t be lower.
HGTV: Dream Home
The dream of winning this televised sweepstakes soon turns to a tax nightmare for many of the show’s real-estate recipients. Only six of the first 21 winners kept their house for more than a year, and the 2007 winner actually ended up in bankruptcy, Homes.com reports. HGTV viewers beware!

I will never forgive HGTV for canceling Bargain Block which was fresh and creative. It also served a great purpose by rehabbing Detroit. All the other shows are for fancy rich people. Bargain Block was for real people.

That was my very favorite. I was interesting creative and funny. I watched flea market flip for years and they took that off too.

I grew up in Detroit so this show and the homes they bring back to life had me hooked from the beginning! I was really disappointed when they went on ROB and lost, their designs are affordable and top notch as far as I'm concerned! I hope Keith and Evan will show back up on my TV through another renovation show!!! HGTV MADE A HUGE MISTAKE CANCELING THEIR SHOW!

HGTV has lost its mind. Bargain Block and Farmhouse Fixer were two of the best, and yet you keep shoving the Property Brothers down our throats. All of their shows are exactly the same but with different titles. I don't watch any of their shows any more. Ditto Christina On the Coast. Yuk! And don't get me started with Alison Victoria. So sick of seeing her and her superior attitude. Wake up!!!

Christina Haack may be a good designer but has absolutely no talent in hosting. It’s like she’s reading the script. Sick to death of Property Brothers anything. Allison Victoria has to be the most arrogant host EVER! Bring back the old garden shows, crafting, low cost designs, etc. That’s how Bargain Block got its fans. No more soap operas, Tarek and Christina, Allison Victoria, and for the Property Brothers…nobody cares about seeing your televised wedding. ENOUGH!!!

Christina doesn't design......that's all done for her. It was during Flip or Flop and it's done for her now. Christina is the Vanna White of HGTV.....she just points at things and says oooh, isn't this pretty?

I agree with this whole list. Down Home Fab is all white black and brown. So boring. I certainly don’t watch any of the El Moussa shows. I miss the original HGTV lineup. Where are the gardening shows?

Sooo the HGTV Has getting Rid of our favorite shows like Bargain Block and Married to Realtors state only to keep these shows that obviously no one cares for. HGTV has enough TV time to keep these shows. I agree with most comments on here when iti comes to what We like And the shows that they decided to keep are not it.

Clearly it is political; the shows cancelled featured a pair of gay men, A minority married couple, and another minority gay man. This follows the Trump crowd ideology of who should not be shown as successful in our USA today. Ain't nobody fooled with this B.S.

I didn’t think of it that way but now that you pointed it out, those were three in my favorite shows. Especially bargain block I love those boys Keith and Evan. My daughter always said Kevin and Evan. I would have to correct her and Farm house. Fixer are you kidding me? I’m getting to the point where HGTV is no Bueno.

I like Ben and Erin on hometown, because the average working class person(which is most of us) can relate to the budgets their clients have to spend. But also because of Ben's carpentry skills. My husband will watch this show with me. We learn something from Ben every show. And sometimes Erin also, with her Diy projects. It reminds me of the way HGTV used to be. Many of the shows on now are just entertainment and advertising. There is no real benefit to the audience. Most of us don't have half a million or more for new homes and renos.

I agree with most of the cancellations except for Bargain Block. I love that show and it's a little different than the other shows. They work in neighborhoods and try to upgrade an entire area for real people, not just the ones with money.
I will, however, miss Married to Real Estate as well.

Bargain Block is the best of the genre. HGTV will rue the day they canceled this one. Unhappy fans want Bargain Block reinstated.

Get rid of gimmicks like Ugliest House and Zillow Gone Wild. I hate all shows that basically ridicule people. Also the celebrity shows with "Lady Bountiful" giving back to the "little people." One gimmick I did like was the French Castle restoration. The couple is engaging and the restorations are often DIY projects with a bit of glamor. Favorite regulars: Bargain Block, Aloha Rennovation, HomeTown. All about rennovations for ordinary people.

I'm tired of Allison Victoria popping up on every show. Every time I turn to HGTV Lottery Dream Home is on.....sick of it. I hate Love It or List It. Don't like any of the people on it. They always are asking for more money when I would love to just have the original budget to do work on my home.

My thought is don’t mess with a good thing. People have different selections. Family on these shows makes people who can’t get out the ability to relate even if it’s entertainment. Entertainment key word! Mess with peoples basics and you are going to end up empty viewing. People will start to boycott. If they haven’t already. Let’s be realistic who is doing these surveys. Maybe one too many Scott brothers showings and now you are talking about another. With them going West. That’s where they started from.

I agree with the list except down home fab. Love the show and the family. I never watch the property brothers show except when theyre helping other flippers. I want married to real estate to come back! I want castle impossible! I want lux for less. And can you please bring in some gardening shows as part of the G in HGTV

I agree that every one of these shows need to go! HGTV tries to cram the same people down our throats on various shows or constant reruns of the same shows until I get sick of them. They need a better rotation of shows.

I think the person running HGTV should step down. People could relate to bargin block, Farmhouse fixer and married to real-estate. Property brothers spin offs are getting old. House hunter needs to go, not entertaining. People start listening to your viewers before we all just tune out.

You canceled Married to Real Estate, but put Zillow idiot on, My Lottery Dream Home, and Ugliest House, along with House Hunters, which is boring! At least, Fixer to Fabulous and Debour’s shows had a design esthetic. I am moving on to Magnolia.

HGTV is the only channel I watch. Just like what Winston said. I love the shows you are canceling. I swear I shouldn’t watch tv. Every time I like a show they cancel it. What can we do to store the cancellations?

I realize HGTV programming has to go in the direction of viewers interest. I don't think they made these decisions based on viewer interest. I watch HGTV on most days for 24 hours. I change channel when I hear Christina "hot mess" Haack's voice. I don't watch the El'Moussa's. I think it's weird that Tarek married a upgraded lookalike of Christina. I can't tell you the last time I watched Property Brothers. HGTV has made a decision that's going to cost them just like they did with Chip & Joanna Gaines. All these talented people they threw away are going to land on Magnolia Network or somewhere else. HGTV better have a real strategic game plan to keep its viewership. I know I'm out! I'm following my favorite shows!

Nothing about her or the amount of money she spends while being a girl who thinks she has to show her balls constantly. Bring back Bargain Block, married to real estate and Farmhouse Fixers etc. Bring back designing like I can do not unrealistic unaffordable construction. I used to watch non stop! Not possible now.

Bargain block didn't deserve to be cut. They are real people doing real creative renovation. I loved seeing the guys get dirty and going to thrift stores to save money. Not everyone has a million bucks to buy a house like on Love it or list it where they keep buying mega mansions.

I've read through a few of the posts and I agree with everyone! Didn't HGTV have any idea how many people like Bargain Block? Maybe there's a behind-the-scenes reason that we don't know about. Years ago Design on a Dime was such fun! But as for me, I spend my time with U-Tube videos. Haven't watched HGTV for at least 2 years.

I am so sad hgtv has canceled most of the shows with heart and love for their communities, and for the love creating something from the old and unloved homes.
This related to so many homes across the country. It showed what you can do on a tight budget, and elbow grease, time and love.
These shows not only inspired ,but also empowered us to use our imagination to create our own homes, to be the home we always dreamed of.
Now it's just blah blah blah, if you have money and want a typically nonpersonalized home this is what you get.
What happened to home is where the heart is.
The only show left that is not cookie cutter is Home Town.
Please bring back the shows that celebrate creativity and love for the humble home.

When HGTV first aired, the shows were very diverse for different interests. My favorite was Carol Duval! I watched all of the art related shows. Now, the shows are all so similar. I'm tired of watching them. The one shining star is Castle Impossible!!

Allmählich geht mir der Sender gehörig auf den Wecker. Ich habe ihn wirklich mal gerne gesehen. Aber inzwischen, jedenfalls in Deutschland wahnsinnig viele Wiederholungen, und absolut viel Fixer Upper, wobei dort immer wieder die gleichen Designs auftauchen. Höchst langweilig.

I did not watch Down Home Fab just because I read that she was a teen mom reality show.
Then I saw her work on the show where they each got a house on the block.
Now I watch it weekly.
As for it looks the same on Down Home, what do you think Erin and Ben do? Its all country grandma chic. I watch the show and enjoy them,but you know who did it just like Down Home Fab. Each does their thing/style.
I am tired of tarik and his wives. I want to see shows about gardening, about curb appeal, home decorating with what you've got. There is a woman on Instagram who updates the room with what they have. No money spent. Now that could be a show!
I do love No Demo Reno and they took that off. I like Ahola Renovation A Lot and Fix my Frankenhouse. So I image they will cancel them if I like them
