15 Worst Best Picture Snubs, Ranked

It is a time-honored tradition for movie obsessives to rationally acknowledge that the Oscars rarely awards the best movie nominated in a given year with Best Picture (exceptions: The Godfather, Parasite, etc.) — and decide to get angry about it anyways. Indeed, when accumulating a list of alternate-universe Best Picture winners, certain unfortunate voting trends on behalf of the Academy come to light, particularly its tendency to shower slow, traditionally-minded historical dramas with awards instead of more edgy, groundbreaking work.

With that said, ranking art is always going to be subjective, and in any given year there are bound to be several movies deserving of Best Picture that don’t even make the nominations list. However, when looking back through Oscars history, there’s more than a few clear-cut cases where a film has gone down in history as being significantly better than the Best Picture winner that year. Ranked in terms of how egregious the snub is, here are 15 Best Picture-nominated movies that should have won the top award.
