‘Unabomber’: 9 Things the Netflix Film Gets Right & Wrong About the True Story
Netflix’s Unabomber explores the story of Ted Kaczynski across two timelines. Jacob Tremblay plays Kaczynski as a young man at Harvard, where he takes part in controversial experiments conducted by Professor Henry Murray (Russell Crowe). Decades later, FBI agent Joanne Miller (Shailene Woodley) works to identify and capture the elusive Unabomber.
The real Kaczynski carried out 16 bombings between 1978 and 1995, killing three people and injuring 23 others, and triggering one of the most expensive manhunts in FBI history. But just how much of what unfolds in the Netflix film actually happened?
From Kaczynski’s Harvard experiments to the investigation that finally brought him down, here’s what’s true, what’s false, and what the movie changed.

Was Ted Kaczynski a child prodigy?
TRUE: In the film, Ted is seen going to Harvard at age 16 with a brilliant, analytical mind. Ted Kaczynski was widely considered a child prodigy and a brilliant mathematician. He showed exceptional intellectual gifts from an early age, skipped two grades in school, and entered Harvard University at just 16 years old.
Did David Kaczynski turn in his brother Ted in an effort to prove his innocence?
FALSE: In the film, David (Matthew Kevin Anderson) doesn’t believe Ted is the Unabomber and contacts the FBI hoping to prove his wife Linda (Tanya van Blokland) wrong, insisting his brother is “not a killer.”
In reality, David became convinced his brother Ted could be the Unabomber after recognizing similarities between the manifesto and his brother’s earlier writings. He ultimately contacted authorities to help stop further violence.
Did Dr. Henry Murray have a mentor relationship with Ted Kaczynski?
FALSE: No, historically, Dr. Henry Murray was not Ted Kaczynski’s mentor. He was a Harvard University psychologist who conducted a series of ethically controversial psychological experiments in which Kaczynski participated as an undergraduate. In the film, they are depicted as having a friendly, cordial relationship, but in reality, Kaczynski was merely a test subject for Murray.
Was there really an FBI agent Joanne Miller?
FALSE: In the film, audiences closely follow Shailene Woodley’s Agent Joanne Miller as she tracks Ted Kaczynski, even traveling to Montana to investigate his remote cabin. In reality, there was no FBI agent named Joanne Miller involved in the Unabomber case. The character is a fictional amalgamation created for the film’s 1990s investigative timeline, and some of her actions, like visiting Kaczynski’s cabin on her own, were invented for dramatic purposes rather than reflecting actual FBI procedures.
Did Dr. Henry Murray use psychological manipulation on Ted Kaczynski during a series of experiments?
TRUE, TO A DEGREE: In the film, Murray secretly records Ted during a vulnerable conversation, then uses his words against him during a stressful debate experiment while his reactions are measured. In reality, Kaczynski participated in Murray’s controversial Harvard experiments, where subjects wrote deeply personal statements that were later used by hostile interrogators to challenge their beliefs.
Students who participated were misled into believing they would debate their personal philosophies with another student. Instead, they faced a trained lawyer instructed to aggressively attack their beliefs and provoke an emotional response while researchers monitored their physical reactions. According to The Atlantic, Kaczynski later described the experience as distressing and deceptive. However, as far as it is known, Murray never personally recorded conversations to use against his subjects.
Was Dr. Henry Murray's test part of a larger government study into the brainwashing that occurred in the Korean War?
TRUE: In the film, after a session goes wrong, Ted Kaczynski demands to know what Dr. Henry Murray was actually testing. He learns that after the Korean War, the U.S. government wanted to understand why some American POWs had seemingly embraced communism and how people could be psychologically broken under extreme stress.
In reality, Murray had worked with the OSS, the precursor to the CIA, during World War II, helping develop methods for assessing recruits and studying how people responded under pressure. His later Harvard experiments similarly subjected participants to intense psychological stress.
Was Ted Kaczynski caught because the FBI discovered an early version of "The Unabomber Manifesto"?
MOSTLY TRUE: In the film’s ’90s timeline, Joanne Miller returns to David Kaczynski’s home, where she is given a box of Ted’s belongings. Inside, she discovers a paper titled “Progress Versus Liberty,” which is a rough draft of “The Unabomber Manifesto” and links Ted to the bombings.
In reality, “Progress Versus Liberty,” written by Ted Kaczynski in 1971, did help strengthen the case against him. However, it wasn’t the FBI that first discovered the connection. David Kaczynski and his wife, Linda Patrik, recognized similarities between Ted’s earlier writings and the published manifesto, helping lead investigators to him.
Did CBS threaten to release Ted Kaczynski's name as the Unabomber before the FBI raid?
MOSTLY TRUE: In the film, CBS gets Kaczynski’s name before the raid and plans to report it within an hour. Fearing for agents’ safety, the FBI convinces the network to hold the story until the end of the day in exchange for details about how his brother helped identify him.
In reality, CBS reporter Jim Stewart did obtain Kaczynski’s name and location. CBS initially agreed to hold the story for two to three days, not the end of the day, but ultimately reported in fear of losing the exclusive as agents moved in to arrest him on April 3, 1996.
Did Ted Kaczynski take revenge on Dr. Henry A. Murray for his unethical experiments?
FALSE: In the film, Ted Kaczynski was depicted as forging fake letters from peers at universities, creating false relationships with Dr. Henry A. Murray as a means of revenge for what Murray did to him during an experiment. In the film, he does it to prove that he is acting on behalf of ego, not science.
In reality, Ted Kaczynski did not take revenge on the Harvard psychologist, who subjected Kaczynski to unethical psychological experiments. This was created for dramatic effect in the story.
