‘Lynley’ Trailer: Leo Suter & Sofia Barclay Team Up as New Detective Duo (VIDEO)
There’s a new Tommy Lynley coming to TV screens this fall.
Leo Suter and Sofia Barclay play the beloved detective duo, DI Tommy Lynley and DS Barbara Havers, in a new series based on Elizabeth George’s internationally bestselling novels, and TV Insider can exclusively unveil the premiere date and trailer. The four-episode crime drama Lynley will premiere on Thursday, September 4, on BritBox. Episodes will be released weekly.
Tommy Lynley is a brilliant police detective but an outsider in the force – simply by virtue of his aristocratic upbringing. He is paired with Barbara Havers, a sergeant with a maverick attitude and a working-class background. With seemingly nothing in common and against all odds, the mismatched duo of Lynley and Havers become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done. His brain and her spirit – his knowledge and her instincts. It is only through working side by side do they both find where they truly belong.
The trailer, which you can watch above, showcases their dynamic as well as offering a look at them on the job.
“What is a bloke like you doing in a job like this?” she wonders, and he explains, “It gives me some sort of purpose I didn’t really have before.”
The cast also includes Daniel Mays, Niamh Walsh, Michael Workeye, and Joshua Sher.
Lynley is created, written, and executive produced by Steve Thompson with Ed Bazalgette serving as lead director and Suzanne McAuley as series producer. Executive producers include David Stern and Colin Callender for Playground; Robert Schildhouse, Stephen Nye, Jon Farrar and Jess O’ Riordan for BritBox; Kate Woods for BBC Studios, and Sue Deeks for the BBC.
Elizabeth George, the New York Times-bestselling author of the original source material, serves as an executive producer on the series. The books were previously adapted into a BBC series, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, which ran from 2001-2007. It starred Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small. It’s available to stream on BritBox.

I enjoyed the series. My problem with it is that there are only four episodes in the entire season. While I can appreciate the episodes are 90 minutes, call me old fashioned, but when I think about how Murder, She Wrote starring Angela Lansbury had 22 to 24 episodes per season, I can’t help but think that today’s generation of writers, directors, etc. are either lazy or spoiled or both. 4? Really? 4?

I've seen a few of the 'current' (or should I say 'existing') Lynley mysteries on my local PBS channel. I have to say, it has never grabbed me as some shows do. And if my attention ws going to be captured, it would have been after one episode. Therefore, since I find the original uninteresting, theoretically the new one can only be better, in my opinion. Not sure I'll try it, though.

Why bother as the original series was terrific? Money!
