‘Invincible’ Season 4 Trailer, First Look Photos: The Viltrumite War Is Coming

Prime Video’s Invincible continues the fine tradition of turning the superhero trope on its head to show the almighty heroes as flawed, and sometimes horrible, people. The extremely violent adult animated superhero series followed Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), a teenager who inherits immense superpowers from his Viltrumite father, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons).

Based on the award-winning Image Comics series by writer Robert Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, the animated adaptation has carved out its own identity in the superhero genre. In the last few seasons, audiences watched in awe as Invincible went where few superhero shows have gone before, pushing its characters into darker territory, exploring the brutal costs of heroism, and refusing to pull its punches along the way.

So, what does Season 4 have in store for its heroes and its viewers? Here is everything you need to know about the new season of the superhero toon that is strictly for adults.

When will Invincible Season 4 premiere?

Invincible Season 4 is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on March 18, 2026. It is expected to consist of eight episodes.

What is Invincible Season 4 about?

The new season will focus on the “Viltrumite War” storyline, introducing major villains including Thragg (Lee Pace), Dinosaurus (Matthew Rhys), and Universa (Danai Gurira).

“Every season we try to increase the scope and increase the stakes and increase what the villains are capable of and what they represent,” Kirkman told TV Insider of Season 4. “[Thragg] the next step beyond Conquest, the same way that Conquest was in some ways the step beyond Nolan from the first season.”

“We’re really putting Mark through his paces,” Kirkman remarked. “Mark has had so many things put before him that he has been able to navigate, but the problems are getting bigger and bigger and bigger. And this is really a season where Mark is put into a place where he’s like, ‘How is this going to keep happening? How am I going to keep getting through this? And how do I get through this one?’”

What is Invincible about?

While attempting to protect Earth, Mark/Invincible struggles with the trauma of his father’s betrayal, a powerful being named Omni-Man, who was once regarded as a hero. He revealed his true mission to conquer Earth for the Viltrum Empire, brutally murdering the Guardians of the Globe and nearly killing his Mark in the process when he refused to join him.

The show tackles themes of the responsibility of great power, as well as the ethical dilemmas of being a hero. Along with a hefty dose of blood, Invincible is a show that explores the darker, more mature storylines that can accompany superhero stories but are often pushed to the wayside.

What happened in Season 3?

Steven Yeun (Invincible), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Conquest) - Season 3, Episode 7

Angstrom Levy’s (Sterling K. Brown) vendetta against Mark intensifies as the merged memories of his alternate selves drive him into madness. After instigating the “Invincible War” and banishing the alternate Marks, he clashes with Mark again in Episode 7, manages to escape (minus an arm), and returns to the Technicians.

In Season 3, Mark’s younger brother Oliver (Christian Convery), a Viltrumite-Thraxan hybrid, experiences accelerated growth and adopts the mantle of Kid Omni-Man. He increasingly fights with Mark over the morality of killing.

The season culminates in a brutal showdown with the Viltrumite envoy and series antagonist Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). After Conquest grievously injures Oliver by practically ripping him apart and nearly kills Atom Eve, Mark kills him in a fit of rage by brutally bashing his head in. The encounter becomes a breaking point for Mark, who ultimately abandons his strict no-killing rule.

“Now he’s in a situation where things are pushing him to accept that he will need to become more like his father just to get by, which is putting him in a really dark position,” Kirkman explained to TV Insider.

Despite a three-season redemption arc, Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas) dies in the Invincible War by turning his skeleton into a bomb, and the season ends with his funeral.

Also: Mark and Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs) officially become a couple, with Eve showcasing new, near-immortal powers in the finale.
