With more than 15 years of hauntings, astral projection, demonic jump scares, and terrifying trips into the Further, James Wan‘s Insidious series has grown into one of modern horror’s most enduring franchises and built a surprisingly tangled timeline along the way.

While the movies were not released in chronological order, the story stretches from Elise Rainier’s (Lin Shaye) earliest encounters with the supernatural to the terrifying ordeal of Josh (Patrick Wilson), Renai (Rose Byrne), and Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins), and beyond.

With Insidious: Out of the Further expanding the saga with a new chapter, it’s a good time to revisit how all of the films connect. Whether you’re planning a complete rewatch or simply trying to figure out exactly where each installment falls in the timeline, here’s how to watch the Insidious movies in chronological order.

1. Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

A prequel to the first two films, set in 2007, Chapter 3 follows a teenage girl named Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott), who tries to contact her late mother but accidentally attracts a dangerous, malevolent entity known as the “Man Who Can’t Breathe.” As a result, a reluctant psychic named Elise Rainier must step in to save her. Aided by parapsychologists Specs (Leigh Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson), Elise ventures deep into the astral plane known as “the Further” to save Quinn’s soul. It’s here that Elise, Specs, and Tucker form Spectral Sightings.

Chapter 3 serves as the narrative foundation for Elise’s character arc, explaining how she recovers her confidence to take on haunted cases again — directly setting up her mindset for the first movie.

2. Insidious: The Last Key (2018)

Set in 2010, just before the events of the first film, Elise is forced to confront demons from her past when a man reports paranormal activity at her childhood home in New Mexico. Returning with Specs and Tucker, Elise revisits her traumatic childhood and her history with a malevolent entity known as Key Face, which she accidentally freed as a young girl.

Back home, Elise reunites with her estranged brother, Christian (Bruce Davison), and meets his daughters, including Imogen, who shares Elise’s psychic abilities. Together, they confront Key Face and uncover painful secrets surrounding Elise’s abusive father and the death of her mother.

The film ends by connecting directly to the original Insidious, as Elise has a vision of Dalton Lambert before receiving a call about the Lambert family’s case.

3. Insidious (2011)

Set in 2011, Insidious is the first film released in the franchise but the third chronologically, following the prequels Chapter 3 and The Last Key. It introduces the Lambert family as Josh and Renai seek help after their son Dalton becomes trapped in The Further. The case brings Elise to their door, along with Specs and Tucker, who reveal Josh’s own history with astral projection. Although Dalton is rescued, Josh becomes possessed by the Bride in Black and murders Elise, setting up the events of Insidious: Chapter 2.

4. Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

Set immediately after the first film in 2011, Insidious: Chapter 2 is the fourth film chronologically and directly continues the Lambert family’s story. After Elise is murdered by a possessed Josh, Renai begins to suspect that her husband Josh is no longer himself. It is revealed that Josh has been possessed by Parker Crane, the Bride in Black (Tom Fitzpatrick), while the real Josh remains trapped in The Further. Dalton (Ty Simpkins), Specs (Leigh Whannell), Tucker (Angus Sampson), and Elise’s spirit ultimately help defeat Parker and reunite Josh with his body. The film closes the Lamberts’ original storyline by having Josh and Dalton’s memories of The Further suppressed, setting up their eventual return in Insidious: The Red Door.

The film also expands on Josh’s backstory, revealing more about Elise and Josh’s mother, Lorraine (Barbara Hershey), their efforts to help him as a child, and what happened during his original haunting.

5. Insidious: The Red Door (2023)

Set roughly nine to ten years after the events of Chapter 2, Josh and Dalton have had their memories of the Further suppressed through hypnosis. As Dalton begins college, those repressed memories resurface, drawing both father and son back into the Further for a final confrontation with the Lipstick-Face Demon and an attempt to seal the Red Door for good.

At the end of the film, Josh encounters the ghost of Elise, but because his memories of her were erased years earlier, he does not recognize her. Elise introduces herself simply as a “friend of your mother’s,” providing an emotional reunion between the two characters and bringing the Lambert family’s story full circle.

6. Insidious: Out of the Further(2026)

The sixth installment in the Insidious series, set about seven years after The Red Door, Out of the Further follows a new lead character, a young mother named Gemma (Amelia Eve), who discovers she can travel into the astral realm, the Further. When evil forces target her, she realizes she can pull entities from the Further out into the real world, turning our reality into a playground for demons. In the film, Elise once again returns, this time helping characters navigate the collapsing barrier between reality and the astral realm.
