“There are always challenges to making a period piece,” says Howards End executive producer Colin Callender.

He faced plenty while filming this romantic drama, based on the E.M. Forster novel and set in early-20th-century Britain. Oftentimes, the weather wouldn’t cooperate (“In England, you can have four seasons within one day,” he says) and neither would the vintage Rolls-Royce, which struggled to start.

In the end, the cast and crew overcame the obstacles to deliver a stunning four-part series, which follows sisters Margaret (Hayley Atwell) and Helen (Philippa Coulthard) as they become involved with wealthy Henry (Matthew Macfadyen) and struggling Leonard (Joseph Quinn), respectively.
