Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo)
There is no Grey’s Anatomy without Meredith Grey, especially now that Lexie Grey is out of the picture. (Rest in peace, Lexipedia.) Plus, Shonda Rhimes has publicly stated that she show wouldn’t continue without Pompeo.
Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson)
Not only is Bailey an O.G. fan favorite, but Wilson seems like one of the hardest-working, drama-free cast members. She and Bailey are in it for the long haul.
Jo Karev (Camilla Luddington)
If we had discussed these odds earlier this month, we might have thought Jo would leave alongside Alex, since it seemed like they were endgame. But now that Alex left her for Izzie, and now that Jo promised to come back stronger than ever, we’re betting we’ll see her around for a while.
Teddy Altman (Kim Raver)
Teddy just returned to Seattle, like, yesterday! She wouldn’t leave again so soon, would she? Besides, she’s currently embroiled in a love triangle with Koracick and Owen.
Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd)
Teddy and Owen have a lot to discuss before their wedding day, so our favorite trauma surgeon isn’t going anywhere soon. Plus, like Wilson, McKidd has seized the chance to direct over 20 episodes of the show.
Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone)
If there’s one longtime character poised for a happily ever after, it’s Amelia. She resolved her paternity drama and reconciled with Link (Chris Carmack), and she has another baby on the way—one that is sure to live and thrive, by the way, because the Grey’s writers surely wouldn’t put her through more maternity trauma. Perhaps Amelia, Link, and their bambino will ride off into the sunset.
Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti)
As Season 16 progresses, so too do DeLuca’s apparent mental health struggles. He’s seeming more and more like his father, and he’s resisting therapeutic support, and we’re worried his career might not recover. Plus, Mer seems to have a new love interest with Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood), so…
Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams)
True, Williams already renewed his contract for Season 17, and true, he stayed committed to Grey’s even as he prepped for his Broadway debut this spring. But Jackson’s storyline this season has been underwhelming, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the actor decided to call it a day.
Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.)
We hate to say it, but Richard might finally be exiting stage right. His hand tremors make a surgical career impossible, and it’s hard to keep a non-surgeon character around on the show—much as we loved, say, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Wilmer Valderrama’s characters.
Three things in this life are certain: death, taxes, and Grey’s Anatomy cast shakeups. With Justin Chambers’ exit behind us, we’re bracing for the next departure on the long-running ABC medical drama.
That said, not all cast exits are equally surprising. Sometimes the writing is on the wall — e.g. Isaiah Washington, Katherine Heigl, even Patrick Dempsey to a certain extent. Other times, the farewells come out of left field — e.g. Chyler Leigh, Sara Ramirez, Jerrika Hinton.
