Wedding rings for Rebecca (Bloom) and Josh (Rodriguez)?! Are the former lovers altar-bound yet again? Don’t get too excited — or nervous — just yet. “You get to see what Rebecca’s life would be like with each of the men that she is thinking about,” explains Rodriguez. Cue the dream sequences!
Besides the aloof Josh, who’s been around since the start, other exes — recovering alcoholic turned restaurateur Greg (Skylar Astin) and legal eagle Nathaniel (Scott Michael Foster) — “represented different phases of the show,” according to Bloom. Expect major moments for each suitor at the end.
“Rebecca and Josh are two peas in a pod,” Bloom says. “They both see the world with this wide-eyed sense of joy.” Viewers will watch them bring that joy to raising kids of their own (played by Leonardo Scheuble-Isip and Lily Katz) in Rebecca’s fantasy, where, of course, “Josh is the soccer dad,” Rodriguez says.
“Both of the musical numbers come incredibly full circle,” Bloom teases. The one above takes that quite literally as Rebecca and BFF Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) are encircled by 12 of Rebecca’s past getups. Bloom adds: “That number took a whole day to shoot!”
While saying farewell, Rodriguez notes, “it was very surreal” on set. Luckily, viewers will be blessed with a musical special Yes, It’s Really Us Singing: The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Concert Special! (airing at 9/8c after the finale), two live shows at Radio City Music Hall in May and a making-of doc on the series ender on CW Seed later this year.
One of the brightest lights in the ensemble cast is Pete Gardner as lawyer Darryl — a single dad who recently found love again. Will the relationship last? You’ll have to watch to find out, but whatever happens, it’s bound to be funny. “I’ve never seen someone improv comedy gold so easily,” Rodriguez says.
Rebecca’s emotional ride would’ve looked very different without her therapist, Dr. Akopian (Michael Hyatt). In the finale, “she appears as Rebecca is trying to sort out her priorities,” reveals executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna, who also directed the episode. “Happiness is a process, and we’ve watched Rebecca hone that process.”
It’s been four seasons since lovestruck lawyer Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) flew to West Covina to stalk her happily ever after on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
