The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered not just for what happened on the pitch, although there was no shortage of unforgettable moments and matches. It also became a celebration of humanity, filled with stories of fans from around the world coming together, helping strangers, and embracing different cultures. It reminded millions that, beyond the competition, soccer (sorry, ahem, football) has a unique way of bringing people together.

From tourists celebrating the portion sizes in America to Mexico and South Korea’s new friendship, the 2026 FIFA World Cup became about much more than soccer. It was a tournament filled with unlikely connections and viral moments that reminded people that even during trying times, people can still find ways to celebrate and come together.

Japanese fans cleaning up the stadium

We have a lot to learn from Japan. Japanese fans systematically cleaned their sections of the stands after matches, leaving them spotless. Armed with large blue plastic bags, they meticulously picked up all the trash before exiting, setting an example for other fans and endearing themselves to their hosts.

Iran’s message of peace

Following a hard-fought draw against Belgium in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium, the Iranian team left a beautiful, heartfelt note in the locker room thanking their host city and expressing a wish for global “peace, respect and friendship.”

“We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor, and left with dignity,” read the letter. “Thank you, Los Angeles, for your hospitality. And thank you every Iranian who gave their heart, voice, and soul for Iran through these 180 minutes. May peace, respect, and friendship prevail among all nations.”

Ismaël Koné’s letter to Canada

Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné’s letter in The Players’ Tribune was a heartfelt message of gratitude. Written after a broken leg ended his World Cup campaign, he thanked fans and his teammates for their support, expressing his pride in his team and Canadian football.

Kone explained he wanted to write the letter “not only to say thank you to everyone who’s had these supportive words for me, or kind thoughts. But even more than that, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who’s believed in Canada football.”

Merlín the Duck

Merlín, a pet duck from Mexico City, became the unofficial mascot of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Owned by street vendor Carla Gómez, the duck went viral after waddling through the streets wearing a tiny Mexico soccer jersey and little socks during the matches.

Jameis Winston wins World Cup hearts

NFL quarterback Jameis Winston was beloved by fans before the World Cup for his fearless playing style and infectious positivity. He quickly became a fan favorite at the 2026 FIFA World Cup thanks to bringing a “man of the people” approach to his Fox Sports reporting as he helped Japanese fans clean up stadium trash and joined Brazil’s iconic soccer chants.

The love affair between Mexico and South Korea

Back at the 2018 World Cup, South Korea’s upset over Germany helped Mexico advance to the knockout stage. Combined with Mexico’s huge love for K-pop and K-dramas, the victory created a lasting bond between the two countries. At the start of 2026 World Cup, Mexican fans quickly embraced the South Korea team and its supporters before their playoff. As fans poured into Mexico, their love was on full display as South Korean fans were welcomed with dancing, drinks, and chants of, “Coreano, hermano, ya eres mexicano” (“Korean brother, you are now Mexican“).

Mexico's underdog run

Despite entering as underdogs, cohost Mexico exceeded expectations with the help of passionate home crowds and the high altitude of Mexico City. Playing at the 7,220-foot elevation of Estadio Azteca, Mexico cruised through the group stage and the Round of 32 without allowing a single goal. Their run ended after a heartbreaking loss to England, but they left the tournament having earned the respect of fans and experts alike.

Cabo Verde's goalkeeper Vozinha

The 40-year-old Cape Verdean soccer goalkeeper became a global internet sensation overnight after blocking Spain from scoring with seven crucial saves. At the final whistle, Vozinha collapsed to his knees in tears. His incredible play and the dramatic story of his mother, whose visa was later fast-tracked so she could watch him play, warmed the hearts of fans everywhere. She was in the stands for Cape Verde’s 2-2 draw with Uruguay.

The Tartan Army invades Boston

To celebrate Scotland’s first Men’s World Cup appearance in nearly three decades, the kilt-wearing supporters flooded pubs, hosted massive bagpipe marches, and briefly drained the local beer supply in Boston, Massachusetts, much to the delight to the local population. They took over Fenway Park and wooed the locals with their anthem, “No Scotland, no party!” It was a love affair to remember as they captured the hearts of all of Boston and social media.

Lawrence, Kansas, rolls out the red carpet for Algeria

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, host city Lawrence, Kansas, made Algeria’s men’s soccer team feel right at home. The college town served as the team’s official base camp, and locals embraced them like their own. Upon arriving, the team was welcomed with swarms of locals letting the team know they had fans in the United States. The city threw big block parties, restaurants added Algerian-inspired items to their menus, and the University of Kansas marching band even played Algeria’s national anthem. By the time the team lost to Switzerland, they made lifelong friends and a new community.

World Cup gave America an image makeover

Before the World Cup, many people did not have high hopes for hosts, the United States. Given the state of politics, high travel costs, and concerns about how fans would be welcomed, some expected the tournament to be a mess. Instead, many international visitors found something different: friendly people, diverse cities, and a country that was far more welcoming than they expected. Along the way, fans discovered Buc-ee’s, Waffle House, air conditioning, free refills, national parks, intense summer heat, Southern hospitality, and plenty of Texas BBQ. Thousands of videos, TikToks, and Reels captured their joy, becoming the best PR America could have hoped for.

Cape Verde's Cinderella story

Cape Verde became the surprise team of the 2026 World Cup. Representing a nation of just over 500,000 people, the World Cup newcomers shocked fans by holding Spain to a 0-0 draw, tying two-time champion Uruguay 2-2, and reaching the Round of 32 before losing a hard-fought 3-2 match to Argentina in extra time. They became the Rocky story of the World Cup, and their legendary run made them one of the tournament’s most unforgettable teams.
