Switched at Birth, “To Repel Ghosts” (Monday, Aug. 24, 8/7c, ABC Family)

While Pretty Little Liars gets the lion’s share of this network’s buzz, I’ve always been partial to the enjoyably sudsy family drama of Switched at Birth. Switched resumes its fourth season (after a five-month break) with the headstrong Bay (Vanessa Marano) still torn up over her breakup with Emmett (Sean Berdy)—who in a later episode will be discovered to have gone Hollywood, so maybe it’s just as well for now? In other relationship news, Daphne (Katie Leclerc) is trying to enjoy her time with college beau Mingo (Adam Hagenbuch), if only her friends would keep their opinion of him to themselves. But we’ve buried the lead here, because before the episode’s out, someone in their orbit will reveal an unexpected pregnancy.

Speaking of children, has there been any creepier portrayal of kids this summer than the easily manipulated Friends of Drill on ABC’s The Whispers (10/9c)? In the penultimate episode of the first season, borrowing from classic possession scenarios like The Thing, Drill takes over one of the tykes, but because it’s unclear who’s harboring the mysterious fiend, much confusion and paranoia sets in.
