Spoiler Alert

In the season finale of This Is Us, fans of the freshman series hoped to finally found out how family patriarch Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) died. Series creator Dan Fogelman loves plot twists and decided to leave fans hanging until Season 2, but not revealing Jack’s demise. And for the first time in the history of the universe, people took to social media upset that a favorite character didn’t die.

The Lead-Up…

Fans have known since Episode 5—”The Game Plan”—that Jack was deceased, and in Episode 13—”Three Sentences”— it was revealed that the triplets were teens when Jack passed. But for weeks, fans have hypothesized about how Jack died, and have looked to the season finale to provide answers.

In the season’s penultimate episode, Jack consumed several drinks before boozily getting into his car—intent on driving to Rebecca’s out-of-town gig. The tease for the season finale also showed Jack consuming beer while several empty cans rode shotgun, and fans were distraught that a beloved character would die in such a reckless way.

Instead of dying while drunk driving, Jack arrived in Cleveland at Rebecca’s performance half-drunk. He tossed back a few drinks to make sure that he was totally wasted, found Rebecca’s smarmy ex-boyfriend, Ben, and punched him half as hard as he deserved. Rebecca then took a blotto Jack home where they had an epic screamfest. In the sober-eyed light of day, Rebecca asked Jack to stay with Miguel for a few days while they cool off. But before he left, Jack delivered a soliloquy about marriage that was one of the most heartfelt moments of the season.

Interspersed with the 1990’s action was the story of how Jack and Rebecca met.

The Reaction…

Fans were quick to use Twitter and Facebook to express their disappointment or happiness that Jack is still alive.
