Grey’s Anatomy, “The Bed’s Too Big Without You” (Thursday, Feb. 5, 8/7c, ABC)

After 11 seasons, Grey’s Anatomy improbably remains one of network TV’s most popular dramas, even though it’s often upstaged in the watercooler Twitter-sphere by creator Shonda Rhimes’s more outlandish melodramas, Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder. That Grey’s can still pack an emotional wallop was clear when the show returned from hiatus last week; the powerful episode included Derek (Patrick Dempsey) separating — geographically, anyway — from Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), April (Sarah Drew) processing bad news about her unborn child, and visiting Dr. Herman (Geena Davis) reluctantly embracing hope regarding the prognosis of her almost-certainly-fatal brain tumor.

Just another day at the office. But as a new tour of duty begins at Grey Sloan Memorial, April is determined to think positive as testing begins and Dr. Herman jump-starts a course in fetal surgery. Meanwhile, lovelorn docs Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) cheer each other on as they dip their toes back in the dating waters. (On Grey’s, no one goes to bed alone for very long.) Diagnosis: Fewer tears on the pillows this week. Let’s hope.
