Roseanne star John Goodman just made a vulnerable admission about losing 200 pounds.
On the Monday, November 2 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 74-year-old actor opened up about how he sees himself after his major weight-loss transformation. Goodman previously said that he weighed nearly 400 pounds at his heaviest. He has since halved his weight after getting sober, undergoing weight loss surgery, and implementing major lifestyle changes.
Host Josh Horowitz asked him about the public commentary related to his physique, to which Goodman replied, “I just ignore it. Since I’m in this business, it is fair game, up to a point.”
He then confessed, “But yeah, I’m still trying to get used to my face. It’s weird. I think of myself as one way, and then I look at myself, ‘Oh, wow.'”
Goodman added, “Yeah, there’s a lot of stuff I’m getting used to.”
When Horowitz asked if his acting opportunities were limited when he was at his heaviest, Goodman acknowledged, “I’m sure it did.” However, he also said that “self-sabotage” likely contributed.
“I was working enough as I was,” he explained. “I wasn’t crazy about it, but I wonder if I sabotaged myself.”

Roseanne aired on ABC for 10 seasons from 1988 to 1997. In addition to Goodman, the beloved sitcom starred Roseanne Barr, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Michael Fishman, Lecy Goranson, Johnny Galecki, Natalie West, and Sarah Chalke.
In March 2018, a Roseanne revival premiered — but it was cancelled in May after Barr was fired for posting a racist Tweet. A spinoff (sans Barr) titled The Conners premiered in October 2018. The show ran for seven seasons, ending in April 2025.
Goodman is also known for shows like The Righteous Gemstones, Treme, and Alpha House, and films such as 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), The Flintstones (1994), Argo (2012), Barton Fink (1991), Flight (2012), Monsters, Inc. (2001), and The Emperor’s New Groove (2000).
