‘Wheel of Fortune’ Contestant Loses $61,000 After Ryan Seacrest’s Awkward Mistake

"Wheel of Fortune" contestant Cory Lyons on October 30, 2026, at the Bonus puzzle

Wheel of Fortune host Ryan Seacrest had an awkward moment with a contestant’s family before the player went on to lose $61,000.

Cory Lyons, from Springfield, Illinois, solved all of the Fortune Frenzy puzzles on October 30, earning him $4,000. The Halloween enthusiast played against Ope Ifafore, from Middleton, New York, and Kathy Seetoo, from Freehold, New Jersey.

Seetoo, a woman who loves all kinds of chocolate candy, obtained the Wild Card and a Half Moon Bay trip wedge, solved most of the puzzle until there were only two letters left. She guessed a “G,” which wasn’t in the puzzle, and then the turn moved to Lyons, who solved “Candyman or Beetlejuice?” He put $1,000 more in his bank.

Ifafore, a professional wedding officiant, solved most of the “Before & After” puzzle. However, with only a few letters left, she landed on Bankrupt. Seetoo solved “Runaway Bride of Frankenstein.”  This gave her $2,700.

For the next puzzle, the turn came back around to Lyons, who solved “Go Where the Locals Go.” He won a trip to England, giving him $18,398.

Seetoo solved two Triple Toss-ups, giving her $4,000 more. Ifafore solved one, putting $2,000 more in her bank.

Lyons solved the final puzzle — “Coming in First Place.” This gave him a final total of $21,598. Seetoo had $6,700. Ifafore went home with $2,000.

When the show came back from commercial, Seacrest said, “We just had a funny moment during the break.” He went over to introduce himself to the people Lyons brought. He asked them how they knew the contestant and if they were his roommates.

The three people said they were his children. “Wow. Good job,” Seacrest said. Lyons shared that he had two more kids at home.

Lyons chose “What Are You Wearing?” for his Bonus Round puzzle. Wheel of Fortune gave him “R,S,T,L,N, and E.” The game show contestant chose ” D,C,H, and O.”

The puzzle then looked like “_OOL  _L_ _ER.” As the clock counted down, Lyons guessed “Wool pullover,” “Wool jacket,” “Wool Sweater.” The puzzle was “Wool Blazer.” There was $40,000 in the envelope, which would have given him $61,598.
