What To Know

  • Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson discuss the Brothers season finale and hint at the possibility of Season 2.
  • Plus, co-creator Lee Eisenberg weighs in on where the story could go next after that finale cliffhanger.

Apple‘s zany comedy Brothers, which puts Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson into the shoes of exaggerated versions of themselves, has wrapped its first season, but following the finale, is there more story to be told? Warning: Spoilers for the Brothers Season 1 Finale ahead!

As the episode “On the Road Again… Again” revealed, in this universe Matthew and Woody are biological brothers, but when we tried to see if that was reflective of real results, the actors have yet to share publicly; they were mum. McConaughey says, “We’ll see. I don’t know. Are the tests in Season 1… Is that non-negotiable?”

Whether or not there’s room for the results to be proven wrong remains to be seen, but for now, fans saw the old friends (and seemingly brothers) set off to find their father, who is tucked away in prison. While the characters in this show left their story on a cliffhanger, McConaughey reveals, “This is one encapsulated season that we broke this into eight episodes for. Thinking beyond that… no, this is what we did.”

“There’s no grand plan,” McConaughey continues to share, as Harrelson chimes in, “We haven’t [planned anything], not a millimeter past [Season 1].” In other words, fans will have to wait for the creative juices to get flowing.

Meanwhile, cocreator Lee Eisenberg is hinting at a stronger possibility for a return, McConaughey and Harrelson permitting. “My intention always was for the show to go on as long as Matthew and Woody choose to play the roles of Matthew and Woody, but I very much designed Season 1 to end with this kind of cliffhanger,” Eisenberg shares.

“I really liked the idea of… [the secret has] kind of been released, the two characters are resolved, but now we’re going to meet their father.”

“It’s early days,” Eisenberg admits, but adds, “this is more in my head than anything that’s happened because the show has not been ordered, but I love the idea of the two of the guys on the open road and for better or for worse, getting into each other’s business and then ultimately meeting their biological father. That felt like a really big opportunity for comedy and also casting.”

After all, Holland Taylor plays Matthew’s mom, Ma Mac, in the comedy. One could only imagine what kind of performer they’d be able to wrangle for Woody and Matthew’s father.

Stay tuned as we await word on a potential second season of Brothers, and let us know what you thought of the finale in the comments section below.
