Trevor defends Pete’s DNS (Do Not Seance) request that Sasappis reveals. Why did he take such a strong stance in this situation?
Asher Grodman: I do weirdly feel like Trevor’s one of the more rational ghosts, which is hard to square, but when you consider it, there is a kinship with Trevor and Pete. I always imagined a world where, when Trevor died, his vibe was so different from these other ghosts that they probably found him to be the most toxic and obnoxious thing possible, and Pete was probably the one who brought Trevor into the fold. Pete and Trevor shared enough of a similar worldview and zeitgeist that that would have been the glue that would have brought Trevor in. I think Pete’s kind of like a big brother to Trevor. Even though Trevor’s constantly just trying to un-dead himself, everything is some ploy to feel alive again, I do think there’s a sense of respect for the afterlife, and I think he thinks that what Alberta is doing is just deeply selfish.

This show is doing a lot of complicated things that kind of reset every episode. We’re dealing with loss, with these existential questions. It’s so ridiculous, but at the core of that, the thing that makes the show unique is the relationship between those eight ghosts, because that’s the thing you can’t find on any other show. So it’s a little more than these guys have lost one-eighth of their family. Even with the return of Pete, he’s back, but he’s not back. That’s not Pete.
It is the first time we’ve really seen the ghosts face this kind of loss where it’s like losing a loved one in an even more permanent way than death.
Yeah, we don’t think that he got “sucked off,” but regardless, there is also this element of even in all of Trevor’s ploys of like a dating app or doing a job, he is being a trickster and a stinker in the living human world, right? We’re not like manipulating the afterlife because we are all so subject to the tortures of the afterlife. So, for us to try to play God, for lack of a better term, feels very wrong. At least that’s how it felt to me as Trevor, and I think a lot of people in that séance circle felt that way. Pete’s like part of the family, so there’s a real loss that’s happened. It’s like the biggest loss we’ve had, and even with him coming back and not remembering who he is, that’s still the biggest loss that we’ve seen in the show.
What can we anticipate from Pete’s return then?
There’s a transition period; that’s not the guy we know, and he’s put in this position of being stuck between the man he was when he was alive and the stories that he’s hearing from us about who he is now. And you may remember there’s a lot that he learned in the afterlife about his life that he now has to relearn, so there’s a rocky road ahead for our poor little Pete.

Trevor comes to Hetty’s aid when he learns that Margaret swapped places with her in the mirror. How did it feel to get into the middle of the sister squabble?
I don’t think there was enough mustache. It should have been like a handlebar mustache or something… We really built that up; I need more mustache. First of all, Maria is just so lovely and funny and smart, and brought this wonderful energy on set, and she’s such a fun foil to Hetty, and of course we get the flashbacks, which is fun. I love the flashbacks of our show.
To the Trevor and Hetty stuff, I can’t tell the future, but what is so exciting about that relationship is that it is truly unlike any other relationship on the show. There are things about these two dummies that are very similar. They’re similar, but they’re foils, and for both Rebecca and I, the fun of that is the immense tension, both sexual and competitive, between the two. The romance is not driving this thing; they have a similar fire in them —
Like twin flames?
Like twin flames, and so, it’s just the dynamic that you can really stretch and build and turn up the heat on that tension. We always love to play into it, and because Rebecca and I work in a similar way, we’re always looking to find those textures and those colors. I have faith that that will continue to develop in some hopefully satisfying way.
What does it mean for Trevor to be able to help out by having Margaret and the mirror sent off to his daughter in Paris?
It’s a fun little detail, the fact that there is this woman who found out that her dad is a ghost, and now she’s got a haunted mirror that’s living with her in Paris while her dead dad is paying for her life in Paris; it’s pretty surreal. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some Abby stuff this season.
You’ve also got Ben Feldman as a series regular this time around. What can we expect to see as he continues to settle in at Woodstone?
Kyle’s beloved by the ghosts. What Ben is being tasked to do on this show is so hard. Rose has set the tone for this thing from the beginning, and we’re not in LA with our writers; we are here in a foreign country shooting the show, and so much of the temperature on set is set by Rose, and she leads by example. Obviously Ben’s done it before, but it’s hard for someone to come into [a show like this almost 100 episodes in]. He’s just done this wonderful job of being exactly who he is and learning how to play with us and bringing in a fresh perspective, but in a way that enhances what’s already there. So it’s been a joy to have him.
