CNN’s Harry Enten Says Democrats Are in ‘Blowout Territory’ in Midterms Polling
What To Know
- CNN’s Harry Enten reports that Democrats are heading towards ‘blowout territory’ in upcoming midterms.
- Enten cites a 71% chance of a Democratic blowout in the House and a 57% chance of Democrats winning at least 52 Senate seats.
- Voters will head to the polls on November 3.
CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten has said the Democrats are heading towards “blowout territory” in the upcoming midterm elections, with the latest polling showing the party poised to take back the House and the Senate.
“The midterms are just days away, and I’m pouring over hundreds, no, thousands of polls and data points,” Enten said on Sunday (October 25), per Mediaite. “And you know what the numbers are telling me? They are telling me that we are heading towards blowout territory! My goodness gracious!”
Enten told viewers not to be “angry” with him “because the numbers do the talking and I just listen.” He then took a closer look at the data, saying, “The chance of a House blowout is 71 percent! Now, there’s a 29 percent chance that it doesn’t happen, right? But 71 percent things happen more often than 29 percent things!”
“So, what does this actually mean in terms of the parties?” he continued. “Well, the chance that the party gets to at least 230 House seats — look, Republicans, the chance that they blow out the Democrats, really, it’s 2 percent.”
Enten added, “We haven’t seen the type of error necessary for Republicans to actually blow out the Democrats… What we’re talking about here is that Democrats are really the ones who have the real chance of blowing out the Republicans. A very, very nice 69% chance.”
He then turned his attention to the Senate, looking at the chances Democrats win at least 52 seats. “It’s 57 percent chance that Democrats win,” Enten stated. “Not just a majority in the United States Senate, but a majority with room to spare in the United States Senate.”
Enten noted there is a “24 percent chance that Republicans win at least 51 seats,” adding, “So you put it all together…. the chance of a Senate blowout is 81 percent chance that one of the two parties wins with room to spare.”
While Enten focused on the chances of a blowout, he also took a moment to look at “the other side of this coin,” the “19 percent that we’re really down to the wire, when we’re really counting the ballots and one state is ultimately going to decide things on election night.”
“It’s possible, but it’s only about a one in five chance,” he said. “Chances are, one of the parties is going to win with at least one seat to spare.”
