What To Know

  • CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten predicted a “terrible” outcome for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.
  • He forecasted a 67 percent chance of a Democratic sweep of both the House and Senate.
  • Enten attributed much of the Republican Party’s struggles to Donald Trump’s deeply negative approval ratings.

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten gave his most likely scenario for the November midterm elections on Sunday (October 11), and he said it was “terrible” news for the Republican Party.

“The big reveal, the most likely scenario, the one you should be calling all your friends about because of all the fresh data that dear Harry brought to you… is this, 67 percent Democratic sweep,” Enten said as he stood in front of his famous graphics.

He said the most likely scenario is that the Democrats “sweep into power, not just taking back the United States House but the United States Senate as well.”

Enten’s prediction was based on Democrats’ big gains since August, with upward momentum in states like Iowa, Ohio, Alaska, Michigan, and even Kansas. “What?!” Enten said. “Kansas, which hasn’t gone Democratic since 1932.”

He also pointed to the unpopularity of the Republican Senate candidates. “I mean, for all the talk that Donald Trump‘s unpopular, the Republican Senate candidates, ugh!” Enten said. “This is terrible! This is gosh darn awful!”

Enten noted that Michigan’s Mike Rodgers is 8 points underwater, Iowa’s Ashley Hinson is down 9 points, Alaska’s Dan Sullivan is down 11 points, Ohio’s John Husten is down 13 points, and Texas’ Ken Paxton is at -16 points compared to Democrat nominee James Talarico.

“[Paxton] is literally the most unpopular GOP Senate nominee at this point in the cycle this entire century! No one else has been as unpopular as Ken Paxton,” Enten added. “Congratulations, you truly have pulled off the impossible.”

He continued, “But it’s not just about them; it really is about Donald Trump. I mean, just look, -15 points or worse net approval rating, and we know Donald Trump is that bad; he’s doubly unpopular, at least in some of the polling data.”

Enten looked at the various issues plaguing Trump’s second term in office, highlighting the low net approval ratings on immigration, trade/tariffs, the Iran war, the economy, and inflation.

“I mean, these are awful,” Enten said. “Inflation [is at] -56 points… What?! What are we even talking about here?! These are atrocious numbers. These are the types of numbers on which Democratic waves are built.”
