Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss the remainder of the 2026 NFL season after doctors discovered blood clots in his lungs.

The news, first reported Monday by ESPN‘s Adam Schefter and NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport, marks a major escalation in a medical situation that developed late last week.

On Thursday, October 15, the Eagles announced that Hurts would miss Week 6 due to a superficial blood clot in his calf, stemming from an injury suffered against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4. By Saturday, after consulting with medical specialists, Philadelphia placed the athlete on injured reserve, initially sidelining him for at least four weeks.

However, follow-up testing revealed that the clot had progressed into deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli—forming clots in both lungs.

Hurts hasn’t spoken out about the health update, but his agent, Nicole Lynn, along with the Eagles, released a joint statement regarding his diagnosis and expected treatment plan, which was shared across all official social media accounts.

While Hurts remains “clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations,” he must undergo a blood-thinning regimen lasting at least three months. League and medical guidelines strictly prohibit players from participating in contact sports while taking anticoagulation medication.

While many fans in the comments expressed support, a few expressed anger about why Hurts wasn’t taken out sooner. The Go Birds News account on Twitter commented: “Why was he ever allowed to play in the London game? Complete malpractice.” Another user commented, “JFC, how can you let our star player fly with such a condition. Get better Jalen. go birds.”

Despite the sudden end to his season, medical experts expect a complete recovery for the 28-year-old player.

“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” the joint statement concluded. “We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.”
