‘NCIS: Origins’ Boss Takes Us Inside Gibbs & Tony’s Reunion — Watch Sneak Peek

Michael Weatherly as Tony DiNozzo, Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs — 'NCIS: Origins' Season 3 Episode 3 "Return of the Mack"

What To Know

  • Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly reunite onscreen as Gibbs and Tony in the October 20 episode of NCIS: Origins.
  • TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek of them back together.
  • Showrunner David J. North previews the reunion and reveals what it was like to see the stars together again.

There’s nothing quite like having the NCIS OG duo together. TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly‘s onscreen reunion as Leroy Jethro Gibbs turns to Director Anthony DiNozzo for help in the Tuesday, October 20, episode of NCIS: Origins proves it.

“Obviously, it was a dream come true to get Gibbs and DiNozzo back together again,” showrunner David J. North tells us. “These two have such a long history together, and to see them come together after 10 long years was a beautiful thing.”

The last time the two shared the screen was the NCIS Season 13 finale, when Tony left behind his work at the agency to raise his and Ziva’s (Cote de Pablo) daughter; Ziva was thought to be dead at the time, but the two have since reunited. Our clip, which you can watch above, reveals that Gibbs and Tony haven’t been in touch.

It begins with Gibbs in the director’s office, taking a moment to clearly remember Vance (Rocky Carroll), killed off in NCIS‘ 500th episode. “If I’m half the leader Vance was, I’ll have done one hell of a job,” Tony remarks, walking in and carrying the only thing he could be. “I know, I’m late. You know how tough it is to find a decent bottle of bourbon at this hour?” Gibbs laughs, and the two share a hug, but the older man winces from his bullet wound. (He was shot in the Origins Season 3 premiere, which led to Gibbs leaving his life in Alaska behind.)

The two then catch up on their lives, with Tony essentially recapping NCIS: Tony & Ziva and Gibbs simply sharing, “Alaska. … I got a dog.” Watch the full video above for more, including their toast to Vance.

“At the end of the day, these two men love each other, but life gets in the way,” North explains. “Sometimes there’s people in our lives who we love that we don’t stay in contact with… but when we see them, no matter how long it’s been, we pick up right where we left off.” That won’t include headslaps (those “days are behind us,” according to the showrunner), but look for “several callbacks that the fans will love.”

That’s why Gibbs turns to Tony. Woody (Bobby Moynihan) was able to run the print Gibbs took off his own neck after he was shot, but someone with serious access needs to access the profile. But also, “when we’re desperate, we often turn to the people we can rely on most. Family. And that’s what Tony is to Gibbs…family,” says North.

Having Harmon and Weatherly filming together again “was an incredible thing to witness,” he tells TV Insider. “It goes without saying, they’re both so insanely talented, and to see them on set together again, ping-ponging back and forth like they do was an awesome, nostalgic thing for me to witness. It was a really special day. One I’ll never forget.”

No thanks. Time to retire PERMANENTLY. Done with Harmon. And after the Tony & Ziva spin off this makes no sense for Tony to appear in this capacity. It’s ruining the show’s story line ,
