‘Boy Meets World’ Star Matthew Lawrence Pitches Jack & Eric Spinoff
What To Know
- Matthew Lawrence expressed strong interest in a ‘Boy Meets World’ spinoff focused on his character Jack and Will Friedle’s Eric.
- Lawrence described the spinoff concept as Jack and Eric reuniting in their 40s after both have hit rock bottom.
- Boy Meets World originally aired from 1993 to 2000, and its previous spinoff, Girl Meets World, ran from 2014 to 2017.
Boy Meets World star Matthew Lawrence just pitched a Jack and Eric spinoff that he would do “in a second.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published on October 12, Lawrence — who played Jack Hunter, the older half-brother of Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong) and BFF of Eric Matthews (Will Friedle) — addressed the idea of a show starring Jack and Eric.
Of his onscreen chemistry with Friedle, Matthews said, “I always say outside of [his brothers Andrew Lawrence and Joey Lawrence], there’s only one guy that I’ve had that connection with in the business when it comes to situational comedy. And it’s Will Friedle.”
Additionally, Matthews shared his elevator pitch for a Jack-Eric spinoff.
They “both went their own ways, and now the show is that they’ve been forced back together again,” he explained. They’ve had to now lean on each other, no matter how much they don’t want to, to get through their early 40s.”
Matthews said that for it to work, both Eric and Jack would need to “clearly have completely fallen on both their faces. I think that’s the only way to really start this thing.”
Interestingly, Matthews said that such a spinoff was actually in the works at one point.
“That, I would do that in a second,” he said. “That was really supposed to happen. But that was the start of Disney and Michael Jacobs Feud.”
Boy Meets World aired for seven seasons from 1993 to 2000. In addition to Matthews, Friedle, and Strong, it starred Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel, William Daniels, Betsy Randle, William Russ, Lindsay Ridgeway, and Trina McGee, among others.
From 2014 to 2017, a spinoff titled Girl Meets World aired for three seasons. In it, Fishel and Savage reprised their roles as Topanga and Cory, with Strong, Friedle, and Daniels all making guest appearances. The show also starred Rowan Blanchard as Topanga and Cory’s daughter, Rowan, and Sabrina Carpenter as her best friend, Maya.
