‘Boy Meets World’ Star Matthew Lawrence Addresses ‘Dysfunction’ Behind the Scenes of Spinoff

Boy Meets World star Matthew Lawrence recently addressed the “dysfunction” behind the scenes of its spinoff, Girl Meets World.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, published on October 6, the actor who played Jack Hunter on the original ’90s series opened up about what it was like to reprise his role. He appeared in a Season 2 episode of Girl Meets World in 2015.

“It was interesting, I can tell you that,” he admitted. “It’s strange… There was a duality to it that was hard to put into words, because you’re back on set with the same people that you had this amazing experience with, and you did something at a very high level with. And then you’re kind of doing a retread in a strange way.”

In Girl Meets World, Lawrence reunited with Ben Savage and Will Friedle. However, the spinoff focused on Cory (Savage) and Topanga’s (Danielle Fishel) daughter, Riley (Rowan Blanchard), and her BFF, Maya (Sabrina Carpenter).

“You’re still there with these people, but it’s now focused on the younger kids, which was a totally fine take, but it was very weird,” Lawrence said. “It was very weird.”

Additionally, Lawrence said he observed “some dysfunction” in the “adult half of the show,” although the child actors were “doing fine.” Lawrence confessed that it “really  bummed me out and made me sad.”

He explained, “I did one [episode] and then probably wouldn’t have done more because it was just, it felt odd. It felt odd to me. There was some things going on.”

Boy Meets World aired for seven seasons from 1993 to 2000. In addition to Lawrence, Savage, Friedle, and Fishel, it starred Rider Strong, William Daniels, Betsy Randle, William Russ, Lindsay Ridgeway, and Trina McGee, among others. Meanwhile, Girl Meets World aired for three seasons from 2014 to 2017.
