‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Aftershow: Will There Be a Baby Switch?

They’re having a baby! Warning: Spoilers for Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 4 ahead!

Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), the parents of Outlander‘s Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), are expecting, but it’s not slowing this tough Scottish lass down. “She still kills seven men in one day and then rides all the way to the battle to warn [her brother] Dougal [Sam Retford],” Slater says in our aftershow video above. She’s referring to her character’s brave, bloody defense of Castle Leoch in the third episode, followed by her race to raise the alarm that Lord Lovat (Tony Curran) has betrayed the Jacobites, sided with the British, and is planning to slay Dougal and his men.

In this fourth episode, she reached the soldiers in time to warn them, but it was her revelation to Brian that she was pregnant that got fans talking. According to Outlander canon, this first pregnancy is with a son, William, who dies at age 11 from smallpox.

But there’s already a baby William in the series, the newborn son of Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) mother, time traveler Julia Beauchamp (Hermione Corfield). Is there a baby switch in store? Could Ellen lose her child and then take in Julia’s son to protect him from Lord Lovat? Right now, the violent and traitorous laird believes wee William is his blood, heir, and a future king. If he were to find out that the child’s father is Julia’s husband Henry (Jeremy Irvine), the bairn would likely be in danger.

“I’m sure there’s a lot of comments already on that, and that’s what we want. We want people to comment because we want them to come and find out what’s really going to happen,” says executive producer Matthew B. Roberts. “And I’m going to tell you this, even when you think you know, you don’t know.” So…we don’t know if a baby switch is going to happen? “Or not. We don’t know who’s going to be who,” Roberts says.

Roy also hints at a surprise twist: “Obviously the war is impending, but Brian and Ellen have many more wars after the war to go through after that. So, if you might think the season’s going one way, it’s going to take a turn — buckle up for that.”

Watch the video above to hear more from Slater and Roy on what a child means for Ellen and Brian’s future and how Roy feels about Brian’s reaction to the news. We also checked in with Corfield and Irvine about Henry, who already suffers from PTSD, having to go to war again. Julia wants him to return as the Henry she knew before, a tough request considering Henry’s trauma, but Irvine thinks it is possible. “With Julia’s help, it probably is,” Irvine says. “Things don’t go well for him when he is not with Julia. I think if they can reunite properly, then yes.”
