Brooklyn Nine-Nine may have ended its run five years ago, but the love for the comedy proves to remain strong, especially following a sweet reunion panel as part of NBC 100 at New York Comic Con on October 8.
Series creator Dan Goor joined stars Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, and Joe Lo Truglio for a walk down memory lane as they regaled attendees with stories about their time working together. It was an especially poignant occasion as they remembered their late colleague Andre Braugher, who brought the hilariously stoic Captain Holt to life onscreen.
When they were asked to share memories of the actor from set, Goor kicked things off, saying, “For a character who never smiled on purpose; his smile stands out, I guess.” The sentiment brought on a wave of emotion. And despite saying earlier during the panel that a reboot or revival isn’t off the table, Goor amended that Braugher’s loss “is the one thing that really makes me wonder how we could do a reboot? I just don’t know. And we can do it, but we would find a way. We can find a way, right?”

Ultimately, Goor said, it was Braugher’s “humanity, his unbelievable talent, his seriousness in being funny, his joy in being funny” are all things that come to mind when remembering the star. “He hadn’t really done a comedy like this before, and he was so joyous about it.”
Goor recalled an occasion when advisors were brought in to discuss what it’s like to work as detectives. “Andy asked a question. He’s like, ‘What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever seen? What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done?’ And they answered, and he’s like, ‘Anything else stupid?’ And they’re like… no. And then Andre went, ‘Take me through your day from one minute before you wake up until one minute after you fall asleep, and then we’ll talk about your dreams.’ And he was serious.”
Truglio, who played Charles Boyle, remembered the unique way in which “cut” was called on set, ultimately sounding like “caw caw.” As the actor remembered it, Braugher would flap his arms like wings whenever it was called; “it was the best.”
Fumero, who played Amy Santiago, noted that she had a lot of memories of Braugher “and a lot of them are just for me to have, but I loved hearing him. He sang every day in his room. My dressing room was next to his, so I heard his playlist every day.” Fumero got emotional as she continued to recall a period of time when she’d been pregnant and would power nap. “I would usually wake up from my nap to the sound of him singing, because he would sing at the top of his lungs in his dressing room… he had a beautiful voice.”
In true Rosa Diaz fashion, Beatriz refused to answer the query as she said, “I rebuke this question.”
The moment from the panel was a sweet tribute to Braugher, and also leaves the question of whether the show could really return without him.
