‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Creator Dan Goor Looks Back on Pop Culture Impact & Teases ‘Sunset P.I.’

Dan Goor for 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'

When it comes to fandom, no series knows it better than Brooklyn Nine-Nine; after all, it was saved by the passionate fans who convinced NBC to pick up the former Fox comedy. So, it makes perfect sense that the series creator Dan Goor and cast would celebrate the show’s impact with a special reunion panel at New York Comic-Con 2026.

Fresh off reminiscing, Goor stepped into TV Insider’s studio to look back on favorite moments, behind-the-scenes stories, and the show’s continued impact on popular media in the above video interview. And with Halloween approaching, we couldn’t help but ask Goor about his favorite Halloween Heist episodes. “The first one’s really meaningful because it’s sort of where we figured it out,” Goor explained, regarding what became a seasonal tradition for the Nine-Nine.

“I think it really changed the Holt-Jake dynamic because at that point it was the first time Jake had ever sort of proven to Holt that he could outwit him, and it’s also the start of the ‘title of your sex tape’ run,” Goor added, referring to the one-of-a-kind dynamic between Andre Braugher‘s Captain Holt and Andy Samberg‘s Jake Peralta.

“I also love the finale, which was also a Halloween heist,” Goor added. “That had some of our most… grand set pieces like the fake hospital where the walls fell down.” He went on to also discuss the milestone Halloween Heist, which made way for Jake’s proposal to Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), along with the pressures of upping the ante each year.

Goor also touched on auditions, and recalled that one of the standouts in helping bring this cast together was Fumero, “Melissa had an unbelievable audition. Part of the audition was improvising with Andy… and Andy is obviously an incredibly experienced improviser, and Melissa didn’t really come from that world,” he recalled. “She had the big laugh at the end; we call that the blow… which is very difficult to do. She had a very in-character, very funny joke, and it was great.”

Meanwhile, when it came to laughs behind the scenes, it was tough to keep from asking who was the most skilled at getting the late Braugher to laugh between scenes. “I don’t know. I would have to say probably Andy, but I don’t know,” Goor admitted. “But he had a wonderful laugh and a wonderful smile, like a killer smile.”

Since Brooklyn Nine-Nine wrapped in 2021, the perspective on some episodes has changed a bit, including the Hitchcock and Scully origin episode, in which Alan Ritchson portrayed a younger version of Scully (normally portrayed by Joel McKinnon Miller). When asked if his casting makes the episode funnier now that he’s the star of Reacher, Goor joked, “I thought you were gonna ask, do I feel like he owes his career to us?”

“It does, it really makes it funny, and we really talked very seriously about whether or not there was an eighties spin-off. Like the Hitchcock Scully story, and he would have been unbelievable, obviously,” Goor added. “Imagine how different and how much worse his life would be if he had done a Hitchcock Scully spin-off instead of becoming Reacher?”

We also asked Goor if he’d heard about Adults‘ reference to the fan campaign that saved Brooklyn Nine-Nine. “Yeah, I saw it… I was like, what’s going on? Is it a dig? And it wasn’t a dig; it was just like a reference to it. I thought it was very cool, and I really enjoyed that show too.”

Next up for Goor is NBC’s forthcoming comedy Sunset P.I., reuniting him with Jake Johnson, who he worked with for Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s crossover episode with New Girl. “Jake is like a generational talent. He is so funny, he’s so good on set, he’s just unreal to be around.” See what else he’s teasing in the full video interview above, and stay tuned for more on Sunset P.I.  as we prepare for the show’s premiere at NBC.
