For Stephen King fans, the story of Carrie White usually ends shortly after prom, when the devastated teen returns home after being doused in pig’s blood by a bully, watching her date become collateral damage in the cruel prank, and turning what should have been the biggest night of her life into a bloodbath. However, Mike Flanagan has a much bigger plan for Carrie than a single eight-episode season. In his ideal scenario, the Prime Video adaptation would unfold across three seasons, giving Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) a much longer character arc than Stephen King’s original novel.

“The beauty of not really being beholden to the book or to any of the previous adaptations is that the potential of the characters and of the greater world that she belongs to does allow, to look at it not as a finite story,” he told Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con. “I don’t speculate as to what it could be or what Amazon may want to do with it down the line. My priority is to make these eight episodes as great as I can from start to finish.”

Given how the first season ended, and Flanagan’s desire to bring the TK-gene-inflicted kiddo into the larger Stephen King universe, we can hope for more Carrie on the horizon, but does that mean there will be a Season 2?

Here is everything we know so far. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Carrie Season 1.

Will there be a Season 2 of Carrie?

Prime Video has not officially renewed Carrie for Seasons 2 or 3. However, Flanagan envisions the story reaching beyond Stephen King’s original novel, where the young teen died shortly after prom. “In my dream scenario,” said Flanagan to Collider, “I think it’s three seasons. In my dream scenario, I think Carrie has a wonderful three-step arc. It’s a trilogy, really.”

The first season establishes Carrie’s story, including her isolated upbringing, the death of her father, and her entrance into high school, but with Flanagan’s adaptation, there is room to grow beyond the events of the book. If given the opportunity, Seasons 2 and 3 can explore Carrie’s evolution, her growing abilities, and potentially her place within the larger Stephen King universe.

How did Season 1 of Carrie end?

The biggest difference between Mike Flanagan’s version, the original novel, and every single version of wronged prom queen to ever be doused with a bucket of pig’s blood (except perhaps Carrie 2: The Rage), is that this Carrie White lives to see another day.

King’s novel ends with Carrie (Sissy Spacek) stopping Margaret’s (Piper Laurie) heart after her mother stabs her, only to later die from her injuries. Brian De Palma‘s movie has Carrie impale Margaret with flying kitchenware before bringing the house down around them both.

Flanagan changes everything in the Prime Video miniseries. Carrie and Margaret (Samantha Sloyan) survive the collapse, revealing that Margaret shares her daughter’s powers and that Carrie inherited her abilities. Margaret is soon killed by the mysterious agency, but Carrie escapes Chamberlain with Emaline (Thalia Dudek), another teen with gifts.

Instead of dying, Carrie is promised a safe place, friends, and a life beyond Chamberlain. Together, they drive off into the future.

Will Carrie be connected to the larger Stephen King universe?

If Flanagan has his way, yes. Chatting with TV Insider, the horror master explained: “The beautiful thing about Stephen King is that the connections between the universe that he’s built are some of the most fun; as lovers of Stephen King, that you get to make those connections.”

Flanagan, who is currently working on his own version of The Dark Tower, went on to state, “I do think this all exists on a certain level of the Tower, and Carrie’s place in that bigger world is something he hints at very much in the book. It was really exciting for us to be able to do that in practice and to really go into that.” Flanagan added that he “hopes” there’s a chance to expand upon that broadening of Carrie’s world in the future.
