Mike McCarthy Regrets Cursing at Aaron Rodgers in Viral Hot Mic Exchange
The Pittsburgh Steelers may not have had a hot night during Thursday Night Football, but Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy‘s microphone sure did.
During Thursday night’s game between the Steelers and the Cleveland Browns, an unmuted field microphone captured an explosive sideline shouting match between the longtime quarterback and his head coach.
The conflict began in the first quarter while the game was tied at zero. As the Steelers lined up inside Cleveland territory on a first-and-10 play, the clock ticked down with less than 30 seconds remaining and no play signaled from the sideline. Rodgers, who was visibly irritated, turned toward the bench with his arms thrown wide open and began screaming.
“What? What the f*ck?! Call it!” Rodgers yelled.
The broadcast feed panned to McCarthy on the sideline, who appeared to react to the incident by retaliating with a “f*cking ahole.”

A video capturing the live moment was shared and circulated across social platforms by many fan football accounts and users. “A rare moment when two people managed to be wrong and right at the exact same time,” one user wrote on X.
Veteran broadcaster Al Michaels handled the awkward live moment with a touch of dry humor on the Thursday Night Football call, saying that Rodgers was obviously frustrated with the sideline delay and pointed out that similar sideline spats happened frequently back during their lengthy tenure together in Green Bay.
Despite the fiery exchange during the game’s opening quarter, the disputed possession yielded positive results on the field. The tense drive concluded when Rodgers connected with Roman Wilson for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

The Steelers ended up losing the game in a tight 27-24 to the Browns after a game-winning 56-yard field goal in the final seconds. During the press conference after the game, McCarthy addressed the tense moment between him and Rodgers.
“What’s said on the field, stays on the field,” McCarthy said to the reporters. “Any negative communication said on my part, I wish I wouldn’t have used those words.”
While this is McCarthy’s first time coaching the Steelers, the two share a complicated history. McCarthy spent 13 years previously guiding Rodgers as head coach of the Green Bay Packers, a team up that culminated in a Super Bowl XLV victory. Thursday’s hot mic incident proves that while years have passed, their hot-and-cold behavior remains unchanged.
The moment also comes during a time that Rodgers has gotten a lot of attention online in front of a mic after appearing on Cam Heyward‘s Not Just Football podcast last month, where he aired out dirty laundry about former teammates and past relationships, most notably with actress Danica Patrick and Shailene Woodley.
