Original horror has had a killer year in 2026, with filmmakers finding success by giving audiences something stranger, riskier, and harder to shake. Films like Obsession and A24’s Backrooms helped lead the charge, proving there was plenty of appetite for scares that ventured beyond familiar franchises and formulas.

Hokum was no exception, emerging as one of the year’s horror success stories with its unsettling blend of folk horror, local legend, and psychological terror. Written and directed by Damian McCarthy, who made audiences quiver with his previous offerings, Oddities and Caveat, Hokum follows a writer, played by Adam Scott, who visits an Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, unaware the property is said to be haunted.

The supernatural horror film Hokum stars Adam Scott as the lead character, Ohm Bauman, a reclusive novelist who visits a remote Irish inn that is teeming with all sorts of paranormal entities. It also stars Peter Coonan as Mal, David Wilmot as Jerry, Florence Ordesh as Fiona, and Brendan Conroy as Cob.

In Hokum, Scott stars as Ohm Bauman, a successful author whose personal life is in far worse shape than his career. Struggling with alcoholism and haunted by his past, Ohm heads to Ireland with his parents’ ashes after a photograph leads him to the secluded Bilberry Woods Hotel, where they once spent their honeymoon.

During his trip, Ohm learns of a locked room inside the hotel with a dark history and supposed connection to an ancient witch. Despite repeated warnings to leave it alone, the disappearance of a hotel employee draws him deeper into the mystery, and eventually inside the room itself.

The supernatural horrors are only part of what Hokum has in store. Ohm’s increasingly terrifying experience forces him to confront the guilt, addiction, and childhood trauma he has spent years trying to bury. Irish folklore and haunted-hotel horror provide the backdrop for a story that leans heavily into psychological unease, punctuated by disturbing imagery and some sharp jump scares. With the Irish countryside drenched in fall atmosphere, it’s also practically made for an October viewing.
