‘Jeopardy!’: 2 Correct Daily Doubles Make a Tight Fight for the Win

It’s not often that a Jeopardy! contestant finds both Daily Doubles in the second round and gets them both correct. It put them on top, but did they stay there?

Justin Robbins, from Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, returned for his second game with a one-day total of $20,001. On September 29, the graduate student played against Dominic Lloyd, from New Orleans, Louisiana, and Jareesa Tucker McClure, from Atlanta, Georgia. Warning: Spoilers for the Tuesday, September 29, episode of Jeopardy! ahead!

Robbins found the Daily Double on clue four. He had the lead with $1,200 and wagered all of his money. In “Things People Say,” the clue read, “A traditional hotel service, it’s something that snaps you into a new awareness; good morning, this is yours!”

“What is a wake-up call?” he answered correctly. This gave Robbins $2,400. He maintained the lead through the first 15 clues with $4,800.

By the end of the round, Robbins had $8,000. Lloyd, a finance consultant, had $1,400. Tucker McClure, an entrepreneur and program manager, was in third place with $600.

In Double Jeopardy, Lloyd found the first DD on clue nine. He was tied for second place with $2,600 and wagered $2,000. Robbins had $6,400.

The clue in “Characters & Poetry” read, “This title talker in a T.S. Eliot poem seems to be named after a St. Louis furniture dealer.” “Who is J. Alfred Prufrock?” he answered correctly. This moved him to second place with $4,600.

Lloyd then found the last DD on clue 12. He had $6,600 and wagered $2,000 again. Robbins had $8,000.

In “Receding Airlines,” the clue was: “A defunct company with yellow airplanes named for this aviator & filmmaker called itself ‘the top banana in the west.'” “What’s Hughes?” he guessed, referring to Howard Hughes. Lloyd was correct, giving him the lead with $8,600.

Three clues later, and one incorrect response from Lloyd, Robbins was back in the lead. From there, the returning champion was on a roll and took a bigger lead.

By the end of the round, Robbins had $14,000. Lloyd was in second place with $9,400. Tucker McClure had $5,000.

The Final Jeopardy category was “Pre-Civil War America.” The clue read, “In charge of the U.S. Capitol’s construction, in 1856 this Secretary of War vetoed an emancipation symbol atop the dome.”

Only one of the game show contestants had the right response. Tucker McClure’s response was “Who is Clay?,” which was wrong. She wagered $3,000, giving her $2,000.

Lloyd’s incorrect response was “Who is Stanton?” He wagered all of his money, leaving him with $0. Robbins answered correctly with “Who is Davis?” He wagered $4,801, giving him $18,801.

This made Robbins a two-day champion with $38,802. He will return for his third game on Wednesday.
