Will There Be a Season 15 of ‘Futurama’? Season 14 Ending Explained

The Season 14 finale of Futurama, titled “Final Ending: The Last Conclusion,” ends on a meta cliffhanger, sort of. Sparked by a childhood memory of Fry (Billy West) and his brother Yancy (Tom Kenny) trying to see the end of a movie in the 20th century, the episode explores the human obsession with conclusions through a series of twisty, cliffhanger vignettes before leaving the ultimate fate of the series open-ended as the show preps for upcoming specials that leave fans with the question: What will happen to the future of Futurama? The Season 14 finale went where no season finale has gone before, with a tribute to season finales themselves. The meta ending to a particularly meta season brought everything full circle, while having a little fun with the idea of how a show is supposed to wrap things up.

But as for the future of Futurama, things are a little hazy. As of 2026, Hulu has not officially announced a traditional Season 15, but Hulu has greenlit three “XXXL-sized” specials instead.

As fans know, this is not the first time Futurama‘s future has been in peril. So, here is a look at how Season 14 ended, what to expect in the future, and, more importantly, whether there will be a Season 15.

Will there be a Futurama Season 15?

There are no further plans at the moment for it to return as a regular series.

Rather than a standard 10-episode seasonal block, creators revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that three extended-length specials are currently in production. Mirroring the style of the classic direct-to-DVD movies like Bender’s Big Score, the first of these special events will be a Christmas-themed episode, scheduled to debut in 2027.

However, given the number of times that Futurama ended, creator Matt Groening told Variety that he believes that the team can overcome this little dilemma.

“They can put us in a coffin. They can nail the lid shut, but they can’t bury us. We will rise again,” Groening said. “I guess I’m not too worried.”

How many times was Futurama canceled?

Futurama was first canceled by Fox in 2003 after four seasons due to low ratings caused by erratic scheduling and bad time slots. It ended with Season 5 Episode 16 “The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings.”

Then strong DVD sales and popular reruns on Adult Swim led to four direct-to-video movies, which Comedy Central later chopped into a fifth season. The network then ordered new seasons.

In 2013, Comedy Central canceled the show a second time, wrapping up its run in September 2013 with the finale “Meanwhile.”

In 2023, Hulu picked up the series for a fresh revival.

How did Futurama Season 14 end?

The Futurama Season 14 finale reaches back to Fry’s childhood, when he and his brother Yancy snuck into a PG-13 movie but never got to see how it ended. In 3026, Fry becomes determined to finally track down the missing ending, kicking off a typical Futurama-esque adventure that jumps across different eras — including prehistoric sequences that reimagine the crew as cavemen.

The finale ultimately plays with the idea of endings themselves, fitting for a show that has been canceled, revived, and seemingly ended multiple times. Fry’s obsession with getting closure on the movie mirrors the uncertainty surrounding Futurama‘s own future.

The cavemen outsmart the mammoth who is stuck in the tar pits, only to be stuck in the tar themselves, leaving the tribe to die with their prey and for Caveman Fry to find new friends. Meanwhile, Amy (Lauren Tom) and Kif (Maurice LaMarche)’s daughter Mandy makes a full recovery, while Hermes (Phil LaMarr) goes with “thick & chunky” soup for his lunch.

And despite the ominous questions hanging over the finale, Fry and Leela (Katey Sagal) plunge toward their deaths, only for the filmstrip they’re holding onto to deposit them directly in front of a train. Luckily, the train stops dead in its tracks because it’s making out with Bender (John DiMaggio).

Unfortunately, Bender then falls in front of the train anyway and is smashed to pieces.

And the movie Fry was so desperate to finish? It shares a familiar ending with one of Futurama‘s previous finales, Season 7 Episode 26 “Meanwhile,” with its two lovebirds essentially stuck in a moment in time together.

As for Bender, don’t worry. The episode follows “Oh my God! He’s dead!” with the simple: “Bender went on to make a full recovery.” The end.

Everyone gets a happy ending.

So, the finale gives Fry the ending he’s spent the entire episode searching for while refusing to give Futurama itself a definitive one, leaving the Planet Express crew alive and the door wide open for yet another continuation. Hopefully.
