‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ Bosses on Breaking the Fourth Wall in Meta Finale

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe saved perhaps its biggest swing for last, turning its finale into something even stranger than the alternate realities Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and his friends had been bouncing through all season: the sitcom itself. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Episode 10.

After discovering they’ve been trapped inside a comic book by the mysterious entity threatening reality, Stuart, Denise (Lauren Lapkus), Kripke (John Ross Bowie), and Bert (Brian Posehn) suddenly find themselves living what appears to be a perfectly normal sitcom episode, seemingly of The Big Bang Theory. It is Denise’s birthday, everyone is behaving a little too conventionally, and, most alarmingly, Kripke can hear a laugh track that nobody else seems to notice.

Eventually, the group realizes Denise’s birthday storyline is literally the B-story. Their real problem? They’re trapped inside a television show.

From there, the finale completely blows through the fourth wall. Stuart gets a glimpse of an actual television set before eventually walking beyond the walls of his own world. The gang winds up on the Warner Bros. lot at Stage 25, where they watch the actors who play them taking their bows in front of a studio audience. Once outside, they encounter even more familiar-looking sitcom realities, including Young Leonard and Two and a Half Women.

For the creative trio of Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, taking the show that far into meta territory was thrilling as they explored uncharted territory.

“I found that whole last episode really exciting. I just felt like we had stumbled upon something that I’d certainly never been a part of before, and that’s the reason to keep going for me, to find new, challenging things to work on,” said Lorre. “That last episode was very much the answer to that quest, which is, ‘Let’s do this. This is insane. Let’s do it.'”

“We had kind of reached a point where we’re like, what could we do next that would keep surprising us in the audience? That seemed like another corner that we could write ourselves into, and then try to write out of,” explained Penn.

And for the most important question of all: Will there be a Young Leonard, as promised via teaser poster in the finale scene of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe?

“Well, we certainly got a poster for him,” laughed Prady.
