Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) faced mockery this week after he praised President Donald Trump for coining the “Lyin’ Ted” nickname amid their contentious 2016 presidential primary battle.

Cruz appeared on the latest episode of New York Post columnist Miranda Devine’s Pod Force One podcast, where he was asked about his “interesting” relationship with the president. Devine noted that Cruz is one of Trump’s most “effective supporters” despite the personal attacks the president made toward him in 2016.

“It’s one of the reasons we’re such good friends,” Cruz explained. “Because in that 2016 campaign, I was the only candidate who beat him, over and over again, and he and I stood in the arena, and I punched him in the face as hard as I could, and he punched me in the face as hard as he could.”

The Republican went on to say that Trump “doesn’t respect girly-men, people who are weak.”

Devine then brought up how Trump called Cruz “Lyin’ Ted” throughout the bitter primary race. “Oh yeah, which I will admit was politically very effective,” Cruz responded. “Look, the man has an instinctual genius.”

He added, “What was so effective about it was that my single strongest attribute was that the voters trusted me… The Jiu-Jitsu of Trump was to take my greatest strength and make an attack that goes right at it, and I think he does that instinctually in a very effective way.”

Cruz’s comments went viral on social media, with many calling him out for sucking up to the president. Some pointed out how back in 2016, Cruz called Trump a “pathological liar” and “a narcissist at a level I don’t think this country has ever seen.” Others reminded the senator that Trump insinuated his wife was ugly and linked his father to the JFK assassination.

“I’m old enough to remember when @tedcruz accurately called @realDonaldTrump a pathological liar and the worst narcissist anyone had ever seen,” wrote one X user.

“Damn Ted, are you gonna cup the balls while you’re down there??” said another.

“Sit in the cuck chair Ted and stay there,” another added.

Another wrote, “A candidate for the most pathetic man that has ever lived.”

“Your wife must be so proud to witness, at first hand, your complete and utter emasculation!” said one commenter.

“How pathetic Ted Cruz is,” another added.

“Deadass one of the most gutless people I’ve ever had the misfortune to know about,” wrote one user.
