‘Reacher’ Season 4 Finale, Explained: Who Lives, Who Dies & More

The Reacher Season 4 finale, “Cut,” picks up with the biggest piece of the mystery finally revealed. After Detective Docherty (Kevin Corrigan) lets Jacob go, Jacob explains what was really on the jump drive Anna had the night she died: an old photo of deceased Chief of Staff Nolan Cahill (Chris Owens), Congressman John Sampson (Marc Blucas), and General Putra (Rodger Edralin), but they are not the focus. It is a blurry whiteboard in the background that is of keen interest.

The photo contains a formula for a weapon of mass destruction, which used to be obscured due to the limitations of ’90s photography, but thanks to recent developments in AI technology, it can now be brought into focus to create a deadly weapon. If a suicide bomber walks into Times Square with the toxin strapped to him, “He’ll kill everyone in a 10-block radius.” Now, Lila (Agnez Mo) plans to auction the formula on the dark web at 10 a.m. the next morning, but first, she and Amisha need to prove that it works.

That sets the stage for one very bloody Reacher finale, with several major deaths, one surprising survival, and a few big changes for the characters who make it out alive. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Reacher Season 4 Episode 8 “Cut.”

RIP Congressman Sampson, American hero

Lila and Amisha (Anggun) need a body count if they want buyers to take their weapon seriously, and they choose Sampson’s fundraiser for their deadly demonstration. Sampson is supposed to use the event to announce his presidential bid, but those plans are derailed when suicide bomber Tomas Waberi (Talijah Levene) arrives. Before Tomas can detonate the weapon and kill everyone inside, Sampson tackles him, pushing him into the river. The bomb explodes, killing Sampson and Tomas, but it saves everyone else at the fundraiser.

Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is there and about to be arrested when Jacob Merrick (Christ Marquette) arrives in a van and gets him out.

Elsbeth (Kathleen Robertson), meanwhile, immediately wants answers. She demands all of the footage from the camera crew she hired, refusing to let anyone control the narrative. “We don’t know who we can trust, and I’m not going to let anyone bury this,” she says. “We are going to find who killed John and make them f**king pay.”

At the hospital, Russell Plum (Kevin Weisman) wakes up handcuffed to his bed and sees the news coverage of the bombing, including footage of Sampson tackling the bomber and saving the crowd. Russell recognizes Tomas’ name as the identity connected to the passport Lila purchased and passes that information along to Docherty.

Authorities are led back to the restaurant, but it has already been cleared out. The only thing they find is a sealed drum containing the body of the poor street kid Lila’s people used to test the toxin on.

Dockery calls Reacher, Jacob, and Tamara Green (Sydelle Noel) with the update — and some bad news. Everyone now thinks the three of them were working with the bomber.

Reacher, Tamara & Jacob Go to War

Tamara realizes Lila and Amisha may return to the restaurant precisely because the cops have already searched it. Sure enough, they’re back inside making more of the toxin and preparing another attack — this time, at a dance club.

Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob have no backup and no one they can trust, so they go in alone. They knock out the electricity first and take down the man sent outside to fix the fuse box. Reacher’s plan from there is pretty simple: He’ll draw the killers toward him while Tamara and Jacob take out whoever they can. And Reacher does exactly that.

He starts luring Lila’s men out one by one, using everything at his disposal. He sets off a gas canister and shoots it to cause an explosion while Tamara and Jacob get into a gunfight elsewhere in the building.

Some men go down by bullets. Others go down by Reacher’s fists. One gets taken out with a metal door. Then someone brings a nail gun into the fight.

Reacher gets his hand nailed to a wall and later to the floor, but somehow even that becomes a weapon. He uses the nails sticking through his hand to puncture his opponents, essentially turning himself into a human mace.

Tamara kills the chemist, but Lila orders one of her remaining men to grab whatever toxin is left and take it somewhere crowded. A nightclub, a packed building — it doesn’t matter. They just need enough bodies to prove to potential buyers that the weapon works.

The man grabs a respirator and the toxin and makes a run for it, firing a small rocket launcher at Tamara on his way out and knocking her unconscious.

Lila and Amisha then kill their own IT tech, while Reacher finishes off the last of the men with an elevator, slowly decapitating him. Finally, Reacher spots Lila in the hallway.

“You should have minded your business on that train,” she tells him. Then Lila and Amisha surround him.

Lila gets what’s coming to her, but Amisha isn’t finished

Reacher has taken plenty of punishment already, but things get much worse once Lila and Amisha attack together. The women swarm him with their blades, slicing him repeatedly and taking chunks out of his flesh. Amisha kicks him through a wall, and Reacher is quickly losing a dangerous amount of blood.

They also make the mistake of taunting him about Ben. “You should have heard the boy cry for his mother,” they tell him.

Reacher keeps fighting, using a piece of plywood to defend himself until he finally manages to send Amisha crashing through a window, apparently killing her.

Meanwhile, Tamara and Jacob chase Lila’s thug carrying the toxin to a nightclub. He quickly comes up with an especially horrifying plan: Put it into the club’s fog machine and spread it through the crowd. They reach him just in time. He is shot and drops the container, but thankfully, it doesn’t break.

Back at the restaurant, Reacher is barely standing but still goes after Lila. Their fight turns increasingly brutal until Lila plunges a knife into him and twists it.

“I don’t know what I enjoy more, f**king you or killing you,” she tells him.

Reacher spots a syringe on the table, grabs it, and injects her with the toxin. “I know which one I like more,” he tells her in her final moments. Lila dies a slow and horrific death on the restaurant floor as the toxin melts her from the inside out.

Reacher takes the thumb drive and stumbles outside, where blood loss finally catches up with him. He collapses — only for CIA operative Foster, a.ka. “Officer Baker” (Hugh Thompson), the man whose head Reacher previously pulled through the CIA holding cell bars, appears. Baker has been following Reacher, waiting for him to retrieve the drive. He is about to shoot him when someone suddenly slits Baker’s throat.

It’s Amisha. She is still alive and not too happy with Reacher. She is about to stab Reacher when Jacob shoots her. Jacob picks up Amisha’s own blade and looks ready to finish her off, but instead, he makes a different choice.

He arrests her. After all, that’s what good guys do.

The epilogue: where does everyone end up

Reacher wakes up in the hospital with the drive and, surprisingly, without handcuffs. He’s concerned because his blood is all over the building where the weapon was being made, but Sampson’s people have taken care of that little problem and protected Reacher.

The official story is that there was a federal raid. Jacob and Tamara are painted as heroes, while Reacher’s name is kept completely out of it.

Reacher also learns that the large scar he already had helped save his life by preventing Lila’s knife from going as deep as it otherwise would have.

Due to this ordeal, Tamara is ready to become a real cop again, while Reacher gets new clothes and his usual worldly possessions back: a passport, a toothbrush, a burner phone, and a few bucks.

He asks for one more favor. He gets Russell’s cat back from the car thieves and brings it back to Russell, along with the thumb drive. “Write your story. Get your Pulitzer. Take care of the cat.”

Reacher later meets Elsbeth, who reveals that she helped get him off the hook. She wants the drive, but Reacher tells her the story is going to come out. She admits that is exactly what her husband would have wanted.

“And that is why he would have been a great president,” Reacher tells her. “And you will be too.”

McMichalis (Jason Diaz ), Jarvis (Kerby Darius), and Buhner (Michael Gaty ) — the “B team,” aka Snap, Crackle, and Pop — eventually corner Reacher about the drive. He lies about it, but the three still thank him for what he did.

Then comes the real epilogue.

Reacher and Tamara accompany Jacob and Uncle Monty (Nick Searcy) to the beach, where they release Anna and Ben’s ashes into the ocean “so they can be together forever.” Tamara takes Jacob’s hand, suggesting there may be something developing between them. Russell writes his story.

For her actions above and beyond the call of duty, Tamara receives the Medal of Valor and is reassigned as a detective in the Homicide Division, with Dockery there cheering her on.

Meanwhile, Sampson receives a military salute at his funeral, and Reacher gets back on a train.

He flashes back to Anna, suggesting this case may haunt him for a while. But where his vision of Anna had once appeared, there is now a woman who looks down on her luck and is distraught.

Reacher sits next to her and shares his cheesesteak. The two don’t say anything. They simply sit together, eat, and ride on.
