Samuel West says a “big change” is coming for veterinarian brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon in All Creatures Great and Small Season 7, a change that the actor says is long “overdue” and well earned for the siblings. But don’t worry, while their relationship is maturing, Callum Woodhouse says their signature “bickering and squabbling” is still there.
Premiering on January 17 on PBS, the new season of All Creatures Great and Small takes place in 1946, after the end of World War II, during which Tristan (Woodhouse) served as a military veterinarian and earned a medal for his actions. He was haunted by what he saw in the war upon his return but was resistant to tell anyone at home about his struggles. Tristan’s romance with Gaia Wise’s Charlotte gave him a helpful outlet, as she also served in the war. An emotional moment between Siegfried (West) and Tristan in the Season 6 finale allowed them to connect on a deeper level, which West says has had a lasting impact.
“The professional respect is made clear in this series, and I think Siegfried’s own sense of Tristan has stopped him really thinking of him in that way before,” West told Radio Times. “Eventually the evidence is clear that he’s turned into a very good vet. He’s been trusted with his official responsibilities and, veterinary wise, he’s had a good war. There is a moment of big change between them, and it’s overdue.”
“If he really loves his brother, he has to let him make his own mistakes,” West explained. “It’s taken him quite a long time to get there, but I do think he’s there now. I have to make a few of my own as well, so it would be churlish of me to deny him the opportunity to learn from his mistakes.”
“I do think there’s a big change in our relationship now,” he added. “There’s a lot of blood under the bridge.”
Woodhouse said that the Siegfried and Tristan relationship “has evolved a lot over the years” and “continues to grow throughout this series,” noting, “After their moment and connection in the church at the end of the last series, it’s definitely taken their relationship to a whole new level.”
Season 7 of All Creatures Great and Small “returns viewers to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales in 1946,” PBS says. “With the war finally over, Skeldale House is full once again and livelier than ever as our beloved characters reunite under one roof and look ahead to a hopeful new chapter.”
“James is excited about new developments in veterinary medicine, but a new vet in the area threatens the status quo,” the season’s description continues. “The world at large may be changing, but inside this slice of Yorkshire, the Dales will always offer the same perfect escapism. Packed with warmth, humor and community spirit, the season brings more heartwarming tales of people and animals alike.”
