Live With Kelly and Mark may have made some changes for its Season 39 premiere, but there are several fashion rules Kelly Ripa doesn’t change when it comes to her wardrobe on the show.
Following weeks of prerecorded episodes, the daytime talk show returned for Season 39 on Tuesday, September 8. The episode featured a new “Stump Mark” game segment rule change, as well as the debut of a new “Travel Trivia” theme.
Ripa sported a black-and-white floral dress for the show’s return, while Mark Consuelos donned a black button-up sweater and matching trousers. In an interview with People published Tuesday, Ripa spilled the secrets behind her and her stylist Audrey Slater-Spiegel’s outfit choices for the show.
“For us, we work together and we know each other’s styles really, really well,” Slater-Spiegel told the outlet before Ripa quipped, “[Audrey] also knows when I don’t feel like shaving my leg, so that’s a pants leg. She’ll be like, ‘What day of hair growth on your legs is this.’”
Aside from dressing to match the length of her leg hair, Ripa said she has no interest in following one of fashion’s most well-known rules: not to wear white after Labor Day. “I don’t follow that rule,” she declared. “I never follow that rule, I’m in white pants year round.”

Consuelos, for his part, praised his stylist, Esther Park, for pushing him out of his fashion comfort zone. “She also pushes me into areas that I’m like, ‘Really?’ and she’s like, ‘Yeah, trust me,’ and it always works,” he told the outlet.
Tuesday’s episode of Live also marked Ripa’s first official day back on the show since undergoing gum graft surgery. A lineup of celebrity guest hosts filled in for Ripa for two weeks on Live, leading into the show’s slew of prerecorded episodes, as the cast and crew enjoyed their annual summer break.
“[I’m] so much better,” Ripa told People in another interview published on Tuesday. “It was fine. It was definitely necessary. I delayed it for five years. I really did because I was like, ‘I’ll wait until I retire.’ And then, eventually my dentist was like, ‘Okay, now we have to finish it.’ ”
Ripa noted that it was “a little strange” to have stitches in her mouth amid her recovery, while Consuelos joked that she didn’t follow her recovery instructions “very well.” Ripa didn’t deny her husband’s comments, adding, “Oh, I was talking the whole time. I was talking like crazy. He was like, ‘You’re not supposed to be talking.’ I’m like, ‘I’m fine!’ It did look weird, though, when I talked.”
She went on to add, “What was funny, a few of my producers said, ‘You just need to take the cotton out, take the cotton out from under your lower lip.’ And I was like, ‘There is no cotton. That is just swelling. That’s why I’m not at work today.’”
Ripa explained that her gum recession was due to “over brushing” and “over flossing,” sharing, “I’m getting better. I’m retraining myself. I host a morning show. I know when there’s bad dental hygiene involved. It’s a good-bad habit, or a bad-good habit.”
