‘South Park’ Trolls Trump With New Name Change
What To Know
- South Park is trolling Trump once again.
- This time, the show has introduced a name change to do so.
Headin’ on down to… South America?
South Park has announced that for its 29th season, the long-lived animated comedy series is changing its name to South America.
In a statement released by Comedy Central, cocreators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced, “Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to South Park. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”
The network also released key art showcasing the new moniker.
The name change joke is, of course, a jab at Donald Trump, who has insisted on renaming the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America and Lake Ontario to Lake America (and reportedly is considering pushing to rename New Mexico to New America). The statement from Parker and Stone also takes aim at those tech companies that have followed suit by retitling their maps to accommodate Trump’s requests. Also, the statement takes a dig at Comedy Central’s parent company, Paramount Skydance, which has been accused of showing fealty and favor to Trump’s administration with its cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and sweeping changes to newsmagazine 60 Minutes and CBS News writ large.
It’s unclear whether South Park will formally change its name to South America or if this is just a timely stunt on the show’s behalf, but, certainly, wilder things have been known to happen in the realm of the Emmy-winning series.
This just the latest instance of South Park making fun of Trump, of course. Soon after the creators won the Emmy award for Outstanding Animated Program, the show shared a poster featuring Trump with his pants down, holding an Emmy and cheering, with the cheeky caption, “You finally got your Emmy!”
