What To Know

  • Earle Meets World stars Alix Earle and Ashtin Earle both tested positive for the BRCA2 gene after their mom’s breast cancer diagnosis.
  • They opened up to TV Insider about filming the vulnerable moment when they found out that they’re more susceptible to certain forms of cancer.
  • The influencers also revealed what they’re doing for their health moving forward now that they have this information.

Alix Earle and Ashtin Earle got extremely vulnerable on Episodes 6 and 7 of their family’s reality show Earle Meets World. The sisters documented themselves getting tested for the BRCA2 gene following their mother’s breast cancer diagnosis.

“We decided we did want to film it because for us, experiencing it with our mom, too, we had no idea this even existed or you could have a gene mutation that made you more predisposed to certain types of cancer,” Ashtin told TV Insider. “So it was a really big learning experience for us. And we thought it would be great to be educational for other people out there who may not know that this is a thing.”

There was a 50/50 chance of the girls having the same gene mutation as their mother, Alisa, and they both found out they were positive for BRCA2. This makes them more susceptible to certain types of cancer, including breast and ovarian cancer. They broke down in tears and hugged Alisa after their genetic counselor told them the news.

“At least we’re in it together, and at least we know, and that’s such a privilege to be able to know and have each other’s back,” Alix said in Episode 7, while Ashtin admitted, “In my mind, it was always, like, one of us might have it, or neither of us might have it. But I never thought both of us would have it.”

The counselor assured them, “If you test positive, it doesn’t mean 100% you’re going to get cancer. It just means you’re 55 to 69% higher risk than the general population.”

Now that it’s been a few months since they’ve gotten their results, Alix and Ashtin shared an update on how they’re moving forward. “We both have a genetic counselor who is kind of guiding us through this, and [Alix] is at the age where she’s able to start getting MRIs yearly,” Ashtin explained in our interview. “I’m still a little young for that, so right now, I’m just living life.”

She described the situation as a “really, really hard and really intense moment, especially to be on camera,” but noted that “it’ll be worth it to educate” other people.
