What To Know

  • Liz Meriwether, creator of New Girl, confirmed there are no scripts or current plans for a reunion of the sitcom.
  • Actor Max Greenfield mistakenly claimed reunion scripts existed.
  • Meriwether addressed the confusion, attributing it to Greenfield’s joking and emphasizing that rumors of a scripted reunion are unfounded.

It turns out recent reports of a New Girl reunion are a bunch of Schmidt. Liz Meriwether, the creator of the 2010s-era sitcom, set the record straight after Max Greenfield claimed to have seen “amazing” scripts for some sort of continuation.

“There are no scripts,” Meriwether told Variety at a Season 1 finale screening of her show Furious at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday. “I don’t even have the scripts written for the things that I need to have scripts written for.”

She also joked that the back-and-forth between her and the New Girl could be a sitcom in itself: “Like, I think this is the show, and I feel like maybe in the world of the internet… maybe the show is just this, these little videos. Like, maybe that’s the reunion.”

Greenfield, who played Schmidt on New Girl, got fans’ hopes up in July when he said on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle that Meriwether had written scripts for a reunion. “I’ve seen scripts,” he said. “She’s written them. Yeah, they’re amazing. She’s a very talented writer.”

The actor later told Variety that he “misread the email” and that the reunion would be an appearance with New Girl castmates Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, and Damon Wayans Jr. at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles on October 10.

“I don’t know how this happened or how it got so out of control,” Meriwether said in a Hollywood Reporter interview last week. “When I found out that Max had said on the Today show that I had written amazing scripts for the reunion, I thought, ‘Maybe it’ll blow over. I don’t know if anyone cares about this.’ Immediately, there was an article. I don’t want to name names, but people pretty high up in the organization were calling other people and asking if there were scripts.”

She also suggested that perhaps Greenfield was trolling us. “With Jake and Lamorne, you always know that they’re kidding. But with Max, he’s such a good actor that you believe him. I was just, like, ‘What are you doing?’”
