A former star of The Great British Baking Show is opening up about her health journey since winning the series.

Georgina “Georgie” Grasso was crowned the winner of the beloved baking competition series (a.k.a. The Great British Bake Off in the U.K.) in 2024. In addition to posting her latest recipes, Grasso also shares candid life updates with fans via social media. In a Sunday, August 16, Instagram post, Grasso revealed that she recently discovered what she thought was ADHD was actually bipolar II and autism.

“It has come as a shock, it feels scary, and it’s taking me a while to absorb, and I didn’t think it would,” she wrote in the lengthy update. “My dr mentioned last year that he thinks it could be, but I thought there’s no way. I’ve spent years researching about adhd, I know next to nothing about bipolar. I feel like I’m not sure who I am right now, and scared to be judged even more so now.”

Grasso stated that it’s “common for adhd to be misdiagnosed as adhd” and that her “turning point” came when she was open and honest with her psychiatrist about her “history and symptoms.”

“Lots of things make more sense. My struggle to hold down jobs. Why for periods I’m amazing at my now job at content creating, then for weeks and months I physically cannot do anything,” she explained. “It gives me a bit of relief. But it doesn’t help the times where I need to work but can’t. Being a content creator means you have to be consistent, so it scares the hell out of me can i actually keep doing this.”

Grasso told her followers that she won’t get into “the depths of my really bad periods of highs and lows,” as she only wants to “share knowledge about mental health that I’m fully knowledgeable on.” Instead, she thanked her loved ones and fans for their support and revealed she is taking new medication to be more “stable.”

“If any of you who have bipolar have any advice for me, I would greatly appreciate it,” she concluded. “And again, thank you for being here! I need you now more than ever. Every save share comment and like helps me be able to stay doing this. I promise [I’ll] be back creating lots of new recipes from this week! Love, G x.”

Fans sent their support to Grasso in the post’s comments, and thanked her for her candid health confession. “Sending big hugs. I was diagnosed with Bipolar II 20 years ago and receiving the diagnosis was hard to cope with for a while, but once I found the right medication and life balance, everything seemed to click and the symptoms were so much easier to manage,” one user wrote. “You are loved, and your creativity inspires me!”

And as someone who suffers from a severe nerve disease and struggles daily just to show up and be what my family needs…tenacity and grit are everything! You WILL do this. You WILL find a way. You will learn the tools you need to cope and strategies for helping yourself through harder times. I promise you, you WILL figure this out and you will thrive.”
