‘The Great British Baking Show’: Who Became First Baker to Leave the Tent?
Spoiler Alert
What To Know
- The bakers faced Battle of Biscuit Week with challenges including American-style cookies and iced gems.
- Tom, a hairdresser from West Yorkshire, impressed the judges with his flavorful bakes.
- The first contestant was eliminated after overdoing the ingredients of their cookies.
After announcing a non-elimination round in the season premiere, The Great British Baking Show wasn’t so kind in week two, as the show said goodbye to its first contestant of the season.
Hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding announced that the 12 budding bakers would face Battle of Biscuit Week, with their skills tested in tricky challenges across the Signature, Technical, and Showstopper rounds.
In the Signature, judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson tasked the participants with making 30 American-style cookies, which could be different flavors but needed to be decorated the same. For the Technical, the bakers had to recreate iced gems, a nostalgic classic.
The Showstopper challenge saw the baking hopefuls tasked with creating a “visually striking biscuit mosaic,” which featured designs such as clocks, sunflowers and computers.

Hairdresser Tom from West Yorkshire impressed most throughout the episode. While many of the cookies were criticized for doing too much or being “too salty,” Tom’s almond praline, salted peanuts and chocolate cookies were a hit. Hollywood even called them “bang on target.”

He continued to impress in the Technical challenge, with his iced gem biscuits being named the best of the bunch. However, he hit a roadblock in the Showstopper when he ran out of time to design his Mean Girls Burn Book biscuit mosaic the way he pictured it in his head.
Although the biscuit didn’t look like he imagined, Tom received praise from both Hollywood and Lawson for its flavors, and he was named Star Baker for the week.

Things didn’t go quite so well for Danni, a HGV service center administrator from Dorset. She couldn’t taste her own “Snickerdoodle” cookies because she’s vegan, so she wasn’t sure whether she was overdoing any of the ingredients. Hollywood called the cookies too “powdery,” while Lawson said they had “too much cinnamon and bicarb.”
Danni wasn’t able to overcome this early setback in the Technical or Showstopper challenges and so became the first baker eliminated from the competition.
Despite the early exit, Danni remained grateful for the experience. “Thank you so much, it’s been so lovely, it has!” she said. “Oh my goodness, I am really happy that I was the first one out because I know everyone in there has more skills than me. But I think I’ve learned something about myself, which is that in the right circumstances I can make quite a few friends. Finding love in a group of strangers – that’s just beautiful.”
