‘The Promised Land’ Season 2 Sneak Peek: Moses Faces New Hijinks in Bible Mockumentary’s Return

The Promised Land

The first season of The Promised Land was a boldly satirical reimagination of the well-known Biblical story of Moses. It was The Chosen assistant director Mitch Hudson who came up with the idea to make the story of Moses in mockumentary style, and it paid off.

Starring Wasim No’Mani as the fabled leader, the first season saw Moses lead the Hebrews out of Egypt, but that was just the start of the misadventures in store. The series, which premiered in July 2024 on YouTube, is now returning, with Lionsgate TV snapping up the distribution rights, this fall. TV Insider has a first look at the action (and laughs) ahead.

In the clip, Mitch Hudson says in the clip, “Season 2 of The Promised Land is coming soon. This season brings some exciting new changes, including a change of scenery.”

Producer Richie Johns then explains, “Filming [Season] 2 in Morocco was an incredible experience. This new setting added even more scale and authenticity to how we portray Moses’ story.”

The official description for Season 2 tells us, “Crossing the Red Sea was the easy part. Moses and the Hebrews are fresh out of Egypt and adjusting to their new freedom, with all the chaos of a fledgling start-up. With Red Sea miracles behind them and 40 years of wandering ahead, the people grapple with doubt, bickering, and bizarre wilderness problems. Alongside Miriam [Shereen Khan], Aaron [Majed Sayess], and Joshua [Artoun Nazareth], Moses tries to keep the group moving forward while questioning his own ability to lead.”

Hudson also teases in the video, “This season finds Moses grappling with a new level of grumbling as the people make their way to the promised land. We’ll see Miriam as she adjusts to her newfound fame, following last season’s tabernacle performance, and we’ll even see Chisisi [Dav Coretti] leaving a trail for his Egyptian family to find him.”

For those new to the concept of The Promised Land, Hudson promises that the series isn’t meant to be “making fun of the Bible.” Rather, “We went to great lengths to honor the heart of the story and the faith of the people in it. The humor comes from the human experience, those awkward, challenging, and hilarious moments that make us who we are. The Promised Land is not laughing at faith. It is laughing with humanity.”

Love season 1, have watched it repeatedly and can’t wait for 2! I often wonder if some of the nay sayers out there have given The Promised Land another chance and recognized how richly this seemingly simple comedy brings the accounts of the Exodus to life ♥️

Brilliant! That’s the one word that best describes Season One of The Promised Land.

The script is tight and crisp, and the wit is sharp as a tack. It occasionally flirts with getting a little too close to corny, but somehow never crosses that line. The characters are relatable and lovable, and the show has a surprising amount of heart.

When Moses returned from the mountain to find the golden calf, his reaction felt natural, raw, and powerful. But even that didn’t prepare us for the emotional buildup in Episode 6. The crescendo at the end had us simultaneously laughing and crying, which is not an easy thing for any show to pull off.

And most importantly, the theology is sound. For all its humor, the show never treats Scripture casually or makes God the punchline. There’s a genuine reverence for God and a respect for the biblical account. The comedy comes from the very human flaws and personalities of the people in the story, but it never loses sight of the truth and significance of the story itself.

Like I said, the best word I can think of to describe this series is simply: brilliant.
