Kaitlan Collins Mocks Trump’s Obsession With ‘Branding Everything in His Name’

CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins highlighted Donald Trump‘s fixation on naming things after himself, saying of the president’s behavior, “‘unique’ is one word for it.”

Collins opened Thursday’s (August 13) edition of The Source by reporting that “Trump’s handpicked Kennedy Center board is testing the bounds of a federal judge’s order, after voting for a second time to close the historic arts center for renovations.”

She pointed out that the board has “one particular renovation in mind,” and that’s an attempt to get Trump’s name back on the building. CNN sources said the board voted to add an inscription below the Kennedy Center’s sign, reading “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.”

Earlier this year, the board voted to add Trump’s name to the center, renaming it “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” However, in May, a federal judge ruled that the president and the Kennedy Center Board acted unlawfully.

“The Kennedy Center’s organic statute makes crystal clear that the Center is to be named for President Kennedy, and it cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial based on the Board’s unilateral say-so,” U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper wrote. “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.”

Collins described this latest move as a “creative workaround” to that ruling. She also noted that the sign is still hidden behind tarps, with security in front protecting it.

The host went on to highlight other examples of Trump trying to add his name and image to things. “The president’s focus has not just been on the Kennedy Center in terms of his broader push to remake Washington,” she said. “It’s also his penchant for branding everything in his name.”

She continued, “That includes the gold coins, the Trump passports, the National Park passes, the Palm Beach airport — I’m not done — the banner at the Justice Department, the new class of battleships. There are many things, not just in Washington, but all across the nation now bearing the Trump name.”

Collins spoke about the situation with New York Times White House Correspondent Shawn McCreesh, who said, “I think it’s very strange that a board of people who are loyal to [Trump] got together today and said, ‘No, we are going to scrape your name on the wall after we‘ve been told to take it off.’ That‘s very unique behavior.”

“‘Unique’ is a word for it,” Collins responded.
