‘The X-Files’: Chris Carter Addresses Possible Return With David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson

The X-Files premiered over 30 years ago, and 11 seasons, one spinoff, and two movies later, it’s once again having its moment. Creator Chris Carter is re-releasing a director’s cut of the second film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, now titled The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn, which begins streaming on Hulu on Friday, August 14. Also for Hulu, Ryan Coogler has developed a reboot starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel.

So, with this resurgence and with Carter once again in the world of The X-Files, when TV Insider chatted with him about the new director’s cut, we had to ask about the possibility of seeing more from him, David Duchovny (Fox Mulder), and Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully).

“So, if you watch the last two reboots of The X-Files, you’ll know that there is something that ends the season finale of Season 11,” he told us. “And some people were outraged. Some people were confused. Let me tell you that through those four episodes, ‘My Struggle’ episodes, I was setting up the big story, maybe the biggest X-Files story ever. And I can’t wait to tell that story if and when I get the chance in either a new series or another X-Files movie.”

Carter’s referring to Scully telling Mulder that William wasn’t their son but rather just an “experiment” and she was “never a mother to him.” As Mulder struggled with that knowledge, wondering what he was if he wasn’t a father, Scully told him he was — she was pregnant with his child.

For Carter, to know that there’s more X-Files coming and new fans can discover the series is “mind-blowing,” he said. “I mean, there’s an X-Files LEGO set now.”

As he recalled, “I was in my mid-30s, sitting by myself on my computer with my trusty dog sitting next to me, and I would get up — the dog knew the keystrokes. There were three keystrokes to get out of the program. The dog knew the keystrokes and would get up with the ball in its mouth like, now we get to play. That was a very personal moment where you never imagine — in your wildest imagination, you can never imagine that the show would have a life like this, that it would have a fandom like this, that it would be a LEGO set.”

Carter also shared that he was out for a run with his wife when he saw a young woman in a graduation gown with a very familiar graphic on her mortarboard. “I walk up to her and I say, ‘I know that graphic.’ And she says, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s Mulder and Scully from The X-Files.’ And next to it, it said, ‘The future is out there.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I know that. I did that TV show,'” he told us. “It’s mind-blowing, so random, that this college graduate, her mom and dad probably didn’t even know each other when the show first premiered, that she is moved, inspired by The X-Files enough to actually make it part of her life plans.”

A couple years ago, he and his wife started watching the show from the beginning. “She’d turn to me invariably and say, ‘How did you do that?’ And I’d say to her, shaking my head, ‘I don’t remember,'” he admitted. “It was like I was watching the shows for the first time as well, which I think maybe is part of the fun of The X-Files is it feels fresh and relevant, and I’m hoping, knock wood, timeless.”
