‘The Rookie’: Deric Augustine Hopes Miles ‘Learns From His Mistakes’ in Season 9

Deric Augustine is looking forward to a major job change for Miles in The Rookie Season 9. After a setback in Season 8, by the finale, he was ready to graduate from being a rookie. That was at the top of what Augustine was looking forward to when TV Insider caught up with him at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
“I hope the audience is looking forward to seeing Miles progress as a P2. Hopefully he graduates. I don’t know yet, but hopefully he does and gain some independence and also learn from his mistakes,” he shared.
Just before the midway point of The Rookie Season 8, Miles went rogue, running off-the-book surveillance and bringing Seth (Patrick Keleher), no longer a cop, along with him. He was kidnapped and everything ended up OK, but Tim (Eric Winter), his former training officer (then watch commander in Season 8) initially told him that because of his actions, he was done at the LAPD. Nolan (Nathan Fillion), who had taken over as Miles’ TO, however, convinced Tim to change that to a suspension, administrative leave, and an extension in the program, all of which would impact his career going forward.

But by the end of the season, Miles impressed his bosses, including Nyla (Mekia Cox) and Grey (Richard T. Jones), and was on track to graduate.
“We saw him make a lot of mistakes and try to rely on his cowboy Texas instincts. And now we get to see him find his own way. So I’m excited to see how he progresses,” Augustine told us. “And our writers and our showrunner, they do a great job giving us all good character arcs that the fans can really grow with and love and feel some type of way as far as their beginning to their journey to greatness.”
Augustine also said that he’s hoping Miles is part of helping find Tim and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil), who were kidnapped by people working for international crime boss Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) in the major finale cliffhanger.
“I think Miles has a great relationship with Tim and Lucy. Tim is his first TO and I think he has a big will to help find his first TO and also his friends. And I think he’s very adamant about being on the rescue team, hopefully, and hopefully saving these guys before they get into some major, major trouble, which they’re already in,” he said.

While I like the Rookie I do feel it’s getting a bit worn. It’s always the same villains and storylines. It needs a bit of refreshing to make it more interesting.

I think it's horrible what they've done with his character. In recent Seasons, Nolan seems to want to be anywhere but on the streets of L.A. training a rookie, they pass Miles from person to person so whoever's free that day could go train Miles. How did they expect him to do well if no one puts in the effort to make sure that he succeeds in his role. This show has lost its main focus. I think it's incredibly sad and I'm not even excited or don't even know I'm going to continue to watch the series.
