‘Today’s Craig Melvin Takes Fans Inside His New ‘Hair Journey’

Craig Melvin is sporting a new look in Today‘s Studio 1A.

Before appearing on the NBC morning show’s Wednesday, August 5, episode, Melvin took fans along for his latest trip to the barber. “Alright. Here we are. You’re coming along for my hair journey,” Melvin said in a Tuesday, August 4, Instagram video before revealing that his hair is the “longest that it’s been in 30 years.”

“This was encouraged by my longtime barber here, DJ Fresh. I’m at Supreme Cuts, and we’re about to get it cut,” he added. “Let’s see what happens.”

The video featured footage from Melvin’s haircut, including a step to help add volume to his hair. “Here comes the difference maker: the hair racket. Apparently that adds the texture,” he explained. Melvin went on to ask his barber whether he should keep growing his hair, to which the barber replied, “No. This makes you look a little younger. You know?” Melvin quipped, “Fresh thinks I need to look younger.”

Melvin concluded the video by showing off the finished product and asking fans about whether he should grow out his hair. “It’s getting long. I might do cornrows or dreads,” he said.

Fans weighed in on Melvin’s haircut and hair growth question in the post’s comments. “I was wondering why your hair was getting so long! My husband said, Craig needs a hair cut!” one user wrote. Another added, “Once it grows in a little more, it’ll be fine. He cut the sides too short & the top is to defined, once it grows out in about two weeks, it will be butter.”

Someone else shared, “I did the same thing post COVID and I haven’t gone back. It looks good but I do agree with some of the others, let your sides grow in more and get a softer fade. Would look great.” A different person posted, “Better question is how does your wife like it?” A separate commenter shared, “Keep it long King.” Another user said, “I’m team, whatever you like, be you.”

In a comment of her own, Weekend Today‘s Laura Jarrett wrote, “I have some feedback.” In response, Melvin wrote, “I would expect nothing less fresh says you can’t shape me up. Ever.”

The hair conversation carried over into Wednesday’s episode of the third hour of Today. “Kudos on the hair, the new altitude,” Al Roker said to Melvin, while Dylan Dreyer added, “Your Instagram went nuts over whether or not you should keep it growing. I like it.” Melvin once asked his co-hosts whether he should cut or keep the length, joking that he could grow it as long as the hip-hop duo Kid ‘n Play.

“You’re like an ebony Chia Pet,” Roker stated, prompting laughter from Melvin. Dreyer quipped, “But I wouldn’t take advice from Al, ’cause he’s jealous he doesn’t have any.” Roker agreed, saying he was “living vicariously” through Melvin.
